FAQ

With the Reduced weight of steel, wouldn't the projectile be at a much higher velocity when fired causing more damage?I mean l couldn't steel be worked to seal the bore, not damage the rifling and still cheap enough to mass produce, and be light enough to carry much more ammo.
Okay one side note before going into the main issue. Steel is really really hard on rifle barrels. Okay, so the most common lead 9mm bullet weighs 124 grains. If all that was wanted was higher velocity, you could switch to a 115 grain bullet (which some people do), or even a 90 grain bullet if you are a reloader. (You see 90 grain bullets for 380 acp ammo, that same bullet could be reloaded onto a 9mm cartridge) But velocity alone doesn't give power. That's why a 115 grain 9mm bullet going at it's standard velocity does less damage than a 45 acp's 230 grain bullet going at it's standard velocity, because it weights twice as much and yet is going only a little bit slower But now go out to your front yard and grab a ping-pong ball and a rock about the same size. Throw them both as hard as you can. The ping-pong ball while lighter didn't go very far did it. See, the ratio of surface area to overall weight of ping-pong ball is very high, so air resistance works on it a LOT. And that is what makes lead so great for projectiles. It is dense so you have a very small surface area per unit of weight meaning that a steel bullet may beat lead in initial velocity but just 50 feet out the lead bullet would be going pretty much the same speed and at 100 yards out the steel would be dramatically slower. Note this is the same reason why 'secret sniper ice bullets' would never work even if you could get it to not melt...it's just too light. Ever hear of tanks and airplanes firing DU ammo? That stands for Depleted Uranium, it is something that is even more dense than lead which is why it makes an even better bullet than lead
I have my grandpa's navy knife from ww2, a mk2 combat knife i think, and i was wondering what type of steel it is made of. I'm guessing it's a high carbon steel, i'd just like to know exactly what grade.
I would get a 1095, serrated edge, tanto style, with either a good quality rubberized or bone handle.
looking for a good pocket knife. i keep going through these 440 steel pocket knives with every day work usage. this will be my 4th. even when i use a whetstone they stay sharp for a short period of time but the edge does not last, 440 is too soft! what is a good steel to look for in a pocket knife? also what are some good brands. ive been using gerber and buck sofar. if you could recommend me a few mid/small sized knives i would greatly appreciate it!
There okorder /

How is the critical temperature of structural steel affected by fireproofing? What temperatures can fireproofed structural steel withstand?
mix the fire retardant with cement, let it harden fast to superstructure. this will create better stability and will not be dislodged in case of impact.
This is my first time buying new strings for my violin and I’ve narrowed it down to two choice based on reviews and cost. The only difference I can see between the strings is that one has a solid steel core and the other has a synthetic core. What are the pros and cons of each type of core?
It depends on the tone you want. Synthetics are a more artificial, but rich tone. Solid steel strings will have a beautiful and bright tone, but may be a tad bit more difficult to play.
Can I ever get my classical guitar reinforced so it can have steel strings on it?
NO. A classical guitar is braced very differently than a steel-string acoustic. Plus the set-up is completely exceptional - the best way the nut is slotted, the best way the strings tie on the bridge, and so on. The anxiety of steel strings would pull the bridge and top off of a just right classical guitar. Although it's a mass-produced cheap person who would take the tension - you'll certainly not be capable to play it - the action on a nylon string guitar is far better in most cases. Who cares how long strings last - you're talking about $5-10 for a suite of strings. Changing strings is part of playing guitar.
What is the difference between carbon steel and spring steel?? And which is the better one to make swords with??
