Q: This person has not taken the motorcycle safety course. He just took the DMV test and got a motorcycle and figured it out on his own. He was not taught any of the technical knowledge that is taught in the safety course like apex turns and what to ideally do in regards to the throttle and brake during a curved road. He maintains that since he has never crashed, he is a good rider and does not need the safety course.
What does taking the motorcycle safety coarse, have to do with being a good rider. The coarse is a starting point on how to ride and get your endorsement. That's all and nothing more. I can't tell over the web how good a rider is, but if he's never crashed it says a lot. If he's made it through his first year as a rider and hasn't crashed, then he doesn't need the coarse. He should take an advanced rider coarse, though. It will teach him some things that he won't learn, in the coarse of every day riding. The first guy is a moron and has no skills to ride a bike. He blames everything else, but himself.
Q: I‘ve wanted a motorcycle FOREVER!I‘m 17 and don‘t really know where to look.A few of my uncles ride Harley Davidsons, but I want a sports bike. One of my uncles told me I should learn on a dirtbike first, but I want to have a motorcycle for transportation. I know there are the dual-sport dirtbikes that are street legal but Idk if I want to buy a dirtbike and a year later buy a motorcycle.Anyways, the point is I don‘t know much about motorcycles or where to look.Any advice?
I would start out with a scooter in the 150cc to 250cc range to get a feel of the road. If you want a sport bike the 600 class would be good to start off. Please be careful because cars do not look out for bikes. Trust me. I know cause I have been smashed.
Q: I ve never been into motorcycles,or even ridden one but I recently inherited one and have been warming up to the idea of riding it. Although I have a new found interest in motorcycles i m still a little skeptical about riding one. Is all the hype about motorcycles being death traps true? Or is it just as safe as riding a car if done carefully? I know anything is possible but getting some advice from real motorcycle riders would help me out. The bike is a 1974 Honda cb550 and has 50 horsepower. Also, i m in the Los Angeles area if that makes a difference. I ve never ridden a motorcycle, but I for sure plan on getting lessons, protective gear, etc.
I've been riding since the Johnson administration (that's Lyndon Johnson, not Andrew). I had one serious accident back in 1971, and it taught me to be paranoid of idiots in cars--not to assume they see me, not to assume what they're going to do, just stay out of their way. And that has kept me safe all these years! Statistically you are more likely to get in an accident per mile traveled on a bike than in a car. And of course when you do the consequences are more severe. But, well first of all, I think young guys on hot sportbikes skew the statistics. Secondly, something like half of all motorcycle accidents in involve alcohol or drugs, or some other totally controllable factor. Look at 'motorcycle fails' on YouTube. You'll see that in about 70-80% of accidents it's the motorcyclist who did something wrong, and usually something really stupid! Take the MSF course (Motorcycle Safety Foundation--you find them through the DMV). They don't teach you to ride, they teach you some important safety habits to keep you relatively safe while you learn. If you ride safely, not full-throttle all the time, if you don't take stupid chances and do wheelies and stunts, you're already a lot safer!
Q: I like the body of a scooter but the speed of a motorcycle. Assuming I put a motorcycle engine in a scooter (no need to address the mechanical issues involved) would it be classified as a scooter or motorcycle?
Federal law says under 150cc is a motor driven cycle and not allowed on interstate system- the subset of 'moped' is in this class usually and that locally means the 49cc scooters restricted to top speed of 30mph. The federal law says above 150cc you have a 'motorcycle'-- and that includes scooter style body work and drivetrains- and you can ride on the interstate system. SO, what size engine do you have determines legal class under federal highway laws and states have to use that as a start. A under 150cc scooter or motorcycle styled vehicle wouldn't be allowed on the interstate system or a state road getting fair amount of federal money. Scooter under some states license plate issue protocol goes to the under 150cc engine models and may be put on the under 150cc engine motorcycle styles as well as the open leg framed scooters as commonly called. The old Lambrettas sometimes got a 250cc motorcycle engine and tranny- look at a Triumph cub site for the example, might still be there. The Cushman site has the old Eagle with the larger than 150cc engines- but the 15hp extra requirement like in Ohio gets it back into the not legal for the interstates system light motordriven cycle license plate. Harley topper with 10 hp also in this class for some states. Get a more than 15 hp , over 150cc engine from whatever source and federally and most states you have a legal motorcycle. Would be real helpful to know the actual engines and frame/body you're posting about.
Q: Guys i recently gave my motorcycle to fit the hella single horn. Horn is working fine. But after i came back from the autoelectrician I found the front brake one of the two front brake cables was cutoff It is missing. Old horn was not giving sound and it was an old one. So i asked them to fit a relay. They have done that. The cable in the front brake lever was some kind of tube which was going to the cowling. How can i replace this cable. I wonder if they have changed the connection for fiting the relay for the horn. or did they deactivate the front brake switch alone. for the horn relay. I dont know what to do Please help me I want the front brake to show the stop light when applied?
You need to stop riding this bike without the front brake. About 60% of your braking comes from the front brake. This mechanic has turned this bike into a death trap. From your description, this mechanic cut a hydraulic brake line and possibly the wiring to the brake light switch. Bring the bike back to the mechanic who did this work. Demand they repair this brake line that they damaged during this work. You should not pay for this repair cause by this mechanic. If the mechanic refuses to repair this bike for free, just leave and never return. Finally, you need to find a new motorcycle mechanic. The one you are using now is completely incompetent. Tell all of your friends who own a motorcycle about your experience. Make sure that they do not use this incompetent mechanic.
Q: I have trouble using my foot to shift up gears, my foot can‘t really seem to go up far enough. Im aware of the heel option which i might do but is there something i can do to improve and not have to use my heel?
Usually the angle of the shift lever can be adjusted by removing it and changing it's position.
Q: for Stop the motorbike generally by applying all the handlebar lever break and foot pedal break. my question is -gt; if I applying handlebar and foot pedal both in same time when I going in very speed , is it dangerous ?
Spend a little money on a ' learn to ride a motor cycle coarse ' it will be money well spent and cheaper than a funeral. Would you think you can fly a fighter jet aircraft with that amount of knowledge - NO, then don't think you can ride a bike without some help and a lesson or two; and forget about speed till you know what the brakes are for and know how to use them.
Q: I have a yamaha xs850: shaft driven motorcycle. From what I‘ve seen on sport bikes with chains the rear wheel is supposed to be able to spin freely when the bike is on a stand and in neutral. My bike however does not.The wheel spins but very difficultly. I can hear something rubbing when I turn the wheel with my hands. It is also very hard to push on the ground in neutral its a pain backing out of a parking spot. Is this normal for a shaft driven motorcycle or is there something wrong with the brakes or bearings?
No, not normal at all! First, put the bike on the central stand and loosen the axle (remember to tighten it back up later) and try spinning the wheel again, if it spins easier than you have some wheel bearing problem or a spacer/washer or two may be missing. If it does not get easier, disconnect the shaft drive at the engine and check the shaft drive by turning the back wheel, it should be the same resistance as before if the shaft drive is in need of repair/overhaul. If it is easier, than try turning the shaft that is on the engine in neutral, there's the problem. ADDED- I must be getting old, bOb is right, check the brakes first!
Q: I need to know if when you buy new motorcycle brake pads do they come with the heat insulator and brace that holds it all together come with the new brake pads of do I have to buy them separate?
Good quality pads have the heat insulator already bonded onto the back of the pad, Cheap pads don't have any insulator fitted and are usually poor quality as well. Not sure of what you mean by a 'brace' as you have not said what bike the pads are for but any hardware that needs replacing would be an extra and not come with the pads. If by 'brace' you mean pad retaining pins they are not normally replaced and are reused. Hope that helps.
Q: I‘m wanting to find a old worn out motorcycle from a junk yard or something and fix up. Save my money up and buy new parts for it. I don‘t really know a lot about motorcycles, but I figured I could buy some books and learn. I‘m 16 and I figured it would be fun and new.
Sounds like a plan. Just be careful regarding title issues, no point in investing time and money into a project if you (or someone else) will not be able to legally register it someday.
