- Q: What would the wire size be for a 3 phase 4 wire - 480/277V - 400A panelboard. Would it be (3) 600mcm w/ (1) 1/0 ground?
- Three phase 3 wire is often called a 'delta' connection since the load(s) are distributed between each pair of phases. The 4 wire systems are also called 'Y' systems since the loads are distributed between each phase and a 4'th 'common' phase. The 4 wire system is intrinsically a bit safer since the common phase can also be made electrically neutral (ground). Doug
- Q: i want to rewire my trailer harness on my truck. i have a 6 wire roung plug but i wat a 7 wire plug. what is the 7 wires for?
- Prepare for accurate and confusing information. The center pin on a 7 pin plug is generally used for backup lights (black wire) if you have them wired in. Being that you have a 6 pin plug you probably don't so you will disregard the center pole. This is the order of color starting from the ground pole (white wire). The ground pole should be the one next to the slot in the body of the plug that lines it up with the plug housing when you put it all together. White (ground), Yellow (L turn), Brown (tail lights), Red (battery charge wire), Green (R turn), Blue (trailer brakes). If you don't have trailer brakes, disregard that pole. The brake lights work through the turn signals, if they are wired separately, it is wrong. Starting at the ground pole next to the slot in the plug, the order of colors goes around the plug in the direction away from the slot, you will end with the blue wire on the other side of the slot next to the white wire. It's very confusing to explain and when you read the colors on the plug compared to what I have told you, you will definately scratch your head. This is the (U.S.) national standard for all trailer wiring, unfortunalely, not all manufacturers adhere to this thus causing confusion for people such as yourself. I cannot even begin to guess how many trailers I have wired and how many tow packages I have installed on cars and trucks. I wish there was an easier way to explain it but the only other option is a diagram which answers does not support. Worse comes to worse and you don't like any of the other answers you get, e-mail me and I will mail you a diagram or maybe even a picture if I can come up with one.
- Q: I'm trying to fix a light fixture for a friend. Her father-in-law gummed it up. At the fixture, there are 3 white wires soldered to a single wire. There are 3 black individual wires and one red wire. There are three switches that control the light. If I hook one of the black and the 3 white to the light, the light stays on constantly. If I hook either of the two other black individually, nothing comes on period.I'm pretty much at a loss. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
- There are three switches that control the light? Remove the cover for those switches and check what color wiring is connected to them. If you have 3 blacks, two could be power to the switches, and the other is line voltage from the panel. The red could be a runner for a 3 pole switch. Whites are neutrals. Trial and error unless you start tracing out wires.
- Q: what if I use a 100 amps.main braker to wire my range and dryer
- Whoa there! What you're describing is a 120 volt outlet (U.S. Canada). Every dryer I know of operates from 220 volts. For a three-prong, 220 volt plug, you should connect the black to one of the hot terminals and the red wire to the other hot terminal. The white wire, which is neutral, would go to the common terminal. The outlet box you describe is a 120 volt box. . .it just won't work! If you're operating a 220 volt dryer from 120 volts, you're asking for trouble. Besides, for a 120 volt outlet, you've got the connections all skewed. Here it is as looking at the outlet from the front: Black (hot) to small blade (brass screw), White (neutral) to large blade (silver screw), Copper (ground) to green grounding screw. You may have to run a 220 volt line from the dryer to a new breaker in your electrical service panel. I strongly suggest you leave this to a licensed, qualified electrician.
- Q: I just bought an aftermarket cd player for my Grand Cherokee and I would rather not have to cut and strip wires so I want to get an wiring harness adapter. My question is, can I just get any wiring harness adapter or do I need the direct connection adapter that is specifically made for Chrysler to Kenwood?
- Doug is spot on, but missing one thing that im going to add in real quick. The wiring harness makes things simper because it is color coordinated with the aftermarket wire radios. Some chrystler/dodge/jeep come with an existing amplifier that must be bypassed in order to have sound come through the speakers. Lucky this bypass is easy as connecting a wire. (quick note, buy only metra install kits- wiring harness and dash kit) On the wiring harness there will be a blue wire (not to get confused with the blue wire from the radio) coming off of it. This needs to be hooked up with the red wires, or the blue wire from the radio's wiring harness which is the amp remote wire. This bypasses the amp.
- Q: I have two white wires left...one is a speaker wire and the other is the constant 12v wire and I don't know which is which. They are the same thickness so unless one of you guys know I'm pretty much screwed here. Also, I have a black ground wire sticking out of the wiring harness and the ground wire from my stereo harness doesn't look like they should attach to each other. This is my first install and I've got everything else hooked up. Just need some pointers.
- How would we be able to tell you the difference between two identical white wires? Use the one on the left? Use a volt meter, and find out which wire has voltage on it. A speaker wire won't test with voltage, a constant power wire will. You can always connect the head unit's ground wire to a metal point on the sub-dash. Edit: if you don't want to use the factory ground wire, it doesn't really need to be connected to anything. I suppose you could attach it to the same spot you connect the head unit's ground wire.
- Q: I want two lights on two 3-way switches.1. Power from basement box into light #1 with 12-2 wire. 2. Another 12-2 wire from light #1 to light #2.3. A 12-3 wire from light #1 to switch #1.4. Another 12-3 wire from light #2 to switch #2. Will this do it?
- nevermind what I think....the guy under me knows EXACTLY what he is talking about! Do it exactly like he says. His way is better than mine was, honestly, because he has more experience. Thats why I deleted my own answer----we call that professional courtesy to seniority and its what electricians do when someone has more experience than we have speaks up. Now it doesnt matter what I think....I only have 22 years experience and someone with more experience than I has given better, sounder advice than I did. You should listen to him, not me.......or anybody else whom cannot match or exceed his experience. Or didnt you know that all Electricians are part of the same Brotherhood? This is why we always agree (or agree to be wrong). I was wrong, obviously, and my advice, second rate, compared to the advice you are about to get. So.....Pay attention! Wisdom follows!!!!
- Q: What's the metal wire fabric?Such as title
- A metal wire fabric by high-tech drawing processing of metal fiber cloth into implant formed the overall high-grade fabrics, fabric, metal wire accounted for about 3%~8%, the same general level of technology, the metal wire accounted for the higher the more expensive.
- Q: What are some of the basic advantages of twisted pair wiring?
- Lower noise due to inductively coupled current from interference sources, such as (say) a motor or AC power line. When a changing magnetic field is near a coil of wire, it induces a current in the wire. If that wire is your network cable, the current will be misinterpreted by the receiving NIC as voltage generated by the sender, which will cause packet corruption. With twisted pair wire, after a twist the magnetic field ends up creating a current in the opposite direction since the order of the wires has switched. Therefore, the current induced from adjacent twists of the wire ends up cancelling. (Assuming the magnetic field strength is consistent over the distance of 2 twists.)
- Q: One wire has part of the plastic coating on the end, the other wire does not.
- the lead is the wires showing. lead wire can also mean attaching a wire and feed it through a wall attach other end to the wire and pull it through. Now if you need both ends to have wire showing take a utility knife firmly place wire on block of wood and lightly cut through the caseing. thats the thick wire that en cases the other wires and peal back and then cut it off. then carefully hold blade of utility knife and wire aganst your thumb on a 45 degrees away from you and pull that will strip the plastic off the wires hope that answers your question dave
