- Q: can't get the pulleys to line up I know I have a mid 70's 400 and the water pump is later than 1969 but I can't find a pulley that works every one is about a half inch off I bought a aftermarket set of underdrive pulley's from march performance and still the same problem the water pump is a half inch off there was no long or short water pump right they are all the same lenght right??? The only difference I know of is that pre 1968 the pumps have a 8 bolt design and after they have a 11 bolt design is that right???
- Actually there was two main pumps for the older ones,, one was called a short shaft,,and one was called a long shaft,,the long shaft was the most popular,and it all depends on whether your car had power steering,,and air conditioning on it,,all the ones that used the long shaft usually had air,,and power steering on them also,,also some of them had a smog pump on them,,this was the main reason they used the long shaft,,most of the smog pumps got taken off and discarded down through the years,,but you still had to use the pump that had the long shaft,,this is the problem your having,,i own a repair shop in Tennessee,,and have been redoing some old cars in the past few years i to have run across the same problem you are having,,you can have a long shaft ordered for you ,,and it will work fine,,i had to use the long shaft on the one i was redoing hope this helps some.

- The vacuum meter is used to measure the vacuum degree of the water pump before the water pump pumping, and to a certain degree of vacuum, the water can be sucked into the upward pressure position of the pump.A pressure gauge is used to indicate that the pumping is pressure in the pipe. The size of the pressure is related to the lift head, pipe diameter, atmospheric pressure and so on.

- You might need a new foot valve. That keeps the water from draining back into the well. Depending on what type of pump you have, could be at the bottom of the well. To bleed the well, you need to remove the plug on the motor...it looks like a nut...about 3/4. You remove that and fill with water...when its full, turn the pump on and keep filling it till it gushes out...put the plug in (with new teflon tape) and it should work. Be careful not to touch the electrical, could get shocked. Its easy if the foot valve is good.

- Check if your water pump has an oil port, and put some oilers. The other possibility is that the pump impeller is coming loose or warped and rubbing. That means the pump is going out and needs rebuild or replacement. That is worse case along with a failing motor bearing.
- Q: I posted this earlier but nobody really answered my question . if my water pump is clearly on the serpentine belt I t need to replace the timing chain to get to it correct? The bolts holding the pump in are around it near the timing chain cover but they don't look like they are inside it. the pump is clearly driven by the serpentine so should I be fine not removing my timing belt to fix the pump? its leaking. Also I know you should replace the timing chain+tensioner but I inspected the chain 400 miles ago its properly tensioned the belt is in good condition its a chain it will last the life of the car its not the cheap belts.

Engine size is a plus ... only a fool who knows nothing will answer your question without knowing the at least needed to know information ... You've said: Timing chain and yet, the first answer by You may be right said: If you can change the pump without removing the timing belt then go for it, you are lucky. See what has happened when the needed to know information were not specified? .. and how do you expect any of us to know the question you have mentioned before and could not read your history in YA? - Q: I got my oil changed yesterday and took like a 3 hour drive and back home and had no issues.. today I was at my work visiting and I noticed smoke coming from the engine [sort of more of steam] and a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust. The light on the gauge inside the car for the engine temp isn't working but all the other ones are. A mechanic told me it was a bad water pump, but I just want some more opinions. Or if the oil change could of effected that.. My engine coolant wasn't that low but a greenish liquid was really leaking from underneath the car.

- It depends on what pump you have. If it is an air pump, no, it does not go in the water. If it is a submersible water pump, yes it does go in the water. Powerheads are one type of submersible water pumps. If it is an external or in-line water pump, no it does not go in the water. Most hang on back filters the pump does not go in the water, but Aqueon is one where it is designed to have the pump in the water. So, what pump/filter do you have?

- Q: It hasnt rain in quite a while, but I havent had any problems with the water or pressure, but it seems like the pump is always quot;onquot;. I purchased this house almost a year ago, never had a well, so I now very little about it. I moved in December, rain season here in NC, and remember the pump going on and off, now its constantly running, Is it normal for the pump to be running that much? any websites to read up on how a water well works?thanks
- i had the same problem... twice. first time was due to a break in the well line. second time was a faulty precharged water tank. i was able to insert smaller soft plastic pipe into the old line, avoiding the backhoe. the second fix was to replace the tank. you do have to watch it tho, i melted my old pump motor due to a brown out. now that i think about it, your impeller could be worn , and the pump cant make pressure. good luck.
