- I would say there should be no difference, just make sure you can wash it as accidents can happen in the kitchen.

- some carpeting comes with a sheen kind of covering called Scotch Guard (it's nothing like plastic, it was sprayed on at the factory). Don't worry about keeping it spotless (just keep ink off of it, tar from your shoes, and paints and nail polish and nail polish remover, clorox, etc.) You can always spot clean a carpet, and you can always have guys come in and for around $40 a room they can steam clean that carpet. Maybe every few years or so.

- I have rented a rug dr. before. I think it cost me around $65 (2002) after purchasing the soap and so forth i needed to use with it. I kept it for 24 hours. It did a great job. I got my full deposit back on my apartment.

- Open and airy can soon become dark and closed in if everything you put into a room is dark. There are plenty of rugs that have brown in them but aren't all brown. - first of all, are you looking for an heirloom piece? Try oriental rugs or persian rugs. Very costly. Can set you back a couple grand but will increase in value over time. you need to look behind the rug for the quality. You are looking for handstitched and lots of detail, etc. The most important characteristic for me is durability and washability. Some you can put into the washer, others need special cleaners, some are spot clean only. The second characteristic important to me is texture. I like plush soft carpets that you can walk on with your bare feet. Of course, color choice and design are important. (floral? transitional? contemporary?) I like transitional. I'm a fan of Mohawk and Shaw area rugs. You can find them at Home Depot. Reasonable prices for machine made rugs.
