- A lot depends on the type of bearing. Generally, you can get the bearing out either with a press, or if you do not have a press or access to a press, you can use a tube or socket of near the right size and push them out with this and the use of a hammer. Before you do this, heat the metal surrounding the bearing to expand the housing to facilitate the extraction of the bearing. Nip into LOWS; go to the plumbers section and purchase gas-blowtorch. This will help heating t he metal surrounding the bearing. DO NOT HEAT THE BEARING ITSELF, okay. Once out, the replacement is simple. Again, heat the metal to help the bearing slip in easier. Use a piece of wood to tap the bearing in with a hammer to tap and seat the new bearing in. Good to go .. Best wishes, Dr Antony (45 years of doing it myself)

- Q: why are ball bearings used to reduce friction?
- Think about a steel ball quickly rolling back forth in a metal track compared to a flat metal moving quickly in a metal track. 'Scraping' causes friction and becomes hot to the touch but the rolling will not get very warm. Therefore, items with ball bearings will last longer.

- They are probably 1/4 or 5/32 diameter balls, but the rest of your question leaves me wondering. The hubs that your bike has are quite OK for the grade of bike you have, and just replacing the bearings will have no effect- or if anything a negative effect- on the operation of the hub. Keep in mind that the bearings run on cups pressed into the hub and on cones that are threaded onto the axle, so replacing bearings on a new bike without upgrading these items is useless. By the way, my guess is that the cups and cones can't be upgraded. I suggest that you leave what seems to be a brand new bike alone and stop trying to improve on something that doesn't need it. If you have some problems, see you dealer and explain it to them- chances are any adjustments will be free (or cheap).

- have you tried putting oil or grease on it? have you checked if the axle bolt is screwed down too tight, it might be binding, loosen just a bit and see. or, you might be able to take the old one off, clean it up in some gasoline, grease it back real good and put the same one back in. you can usually tell, if the rollers look good you can use it, if they are all pitted looking the bearing is shot. from Grandpa. - Seems an average cost. Driveshafts are not cheap and bearings have to be pressed into place. There would be a significant labour charge too.
- Q: I have recently purchased a longboard with abec 5 bearings. I have a regular board, with abec 7 bearings. I plan to use the longboard more, and i want to no if it will work to use the regular boards bearings for the longboard. Anybody know?
- You probably know that the more bearings (in this case 7) the longer the board will role. It all depends on what you want. The best thing you can do is try out all of the possible combinations (and you only have two, so it shouldn't take that long).

- rear bearings in the engine or the differential. the two are very different but either one would be a project. the engine, you would have to pull the engine out or pull the oil pan off and deal with it that way. pull all of the main bearing caps and replace them. the rear end is a bit more complex as you have to pull the axles out, pull the carrier and start from there.
