Are there paint shields specifically designed for stairs? Thanks: I don't see any mention in your Q about a TARP, but certainly the carpet needs to be masked, and covered with drops. You can use shielding, but it's a tedious, often one step at a time process. In your case a lot of prep will give you the better job. I might use thin plexi. or even a wide blade MUD knife, to press back the carpet, then with something substantial like gaffing tape, or even Duct tape pressed into the carpet to keep the fibers off the area to be painted. In any case cutting will be the major issue, and caution the keyword. The prep alone will take longer than the painting, but worth the effort,and seemingly your better option. NO I might not pull the carpet, but then again, I don't have an idea of how the carpet has been installed? Tack Strips? Nailed/stapled to the wall butting? Glued? Steven Wolf Just my two sense

These will help stop the rugs from scooching. But you must get the type for rugs over carpets. So know your rug size and get one that will fit. You can trim to size with scissors. The reason is that the heat will actually cause the stain to permanently stay in the carpet fiber. Another common cleaning mistake includes rubbing the stain too vigorously with a cloth, brush, or any other item. Instead, soak up the spill with a clean white cloth, paper towel, or newspaper by standing on top of it. Use a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water and brush lightly to remove the stain. Vigorous brushing untwists the carpet fibers, which gives the carpet a dull appearance thereafter.

Q:I am looking to shampoo my carpet but don't want to splash out on an expensive cleaner. Is there like a spray or can of powder or something I can buy and use myself at home to clean my carpet?: Lots of possibilities 1) In the supermarket you will find a carpet cleaner amongst all the other soaps and floor cleaners - it tends to be used for spot cleaning, spray it on leave it for the stated length of time and then vacuum it off. 2) If you want to clean the whole carpet in a room you might find a friend who has a Kirby and cant wait to lend it to you to clean your carpet. It does quite a good job and removes most of the stains but you need a three year degree course in mechanical engineering to understand the instruction manual and when you have mastered that you can only do about 6 square inches at a time before the fluid runs out and you have to disassemble everything, make up a fresh mixture ready for the next 6 square inches. Make sure you return the Kirby after borrowing it because a) it will take over your life if you keep it and (b) the owners probably had to take out a second mortgage to buy it so they will be eager for you to return it 3) Some supermarkets will rent out a large carpet cleanng mchine or 4) you could get in a professional - look in Yellow Pages for carpet cleaning - they will do a proper job fairly quickly. Q:if i use oxyclean and water in my floor scrubber for a cleaner to do my whole carpets will it work nice?: I use oxyclean in my residential grade carpet steamer all the time and I haven't noticed any negative effects. I add about half the carpet soap that the instructions say to use and use about a tablespoon of oxyclean. Make sure to use really hot water and shake the water holder around to dissolve all the oxyclean before you put it in the machine. The reason its OK to use oxyclean is that any residue left behind won't be sticky and attract dirt like soap products would. That being said make sure to test out the oxyclean on a hidden corner of the carpet first, just brush in a small spot to make sure nothing bad happens.

Thanks a lot ppl.: rug doctors work great! last time I rented one from the supermarket, it was 50 or 60 dollars (CDN) plus you have to give them a credit card number. by the time I bought shampoo ( I use vinegar as the defoamer) it cost 80 or 90 dollars total. how wet the carpet gets depends on how wet you make it--the machine gets most of the water out. if you plan on shampooing furniture and stairs, be sure to get the upholstery attatchment

Most need to be brushed into dirtier areas (they sell broom-like brushes). Woolite makes a can of foam that's sprayed down and vacuumed up after it dries... can be applied more heavily and rubbed into dirtier areas. Should be a few of these products in the cleaning supplies section of your local supermarket or discount store.
