Q: I need to get my water pump replaced because it is cracked, a coolant flush and my belt is dry. I went to pep boys because my check engine light came on.They want to charge me 950 for the job. I am reluctant to pay that much. I drive an '06 Pontiac Torrent. I am suppose to take my car in today but I am not sure if I am being ripped off or not. Is 950 too much?
I would say that $950 is a very high price for a new water pump, considering that the pump by itself is less than $70. It should not take more than 3 or 4 hours to replace, so even setting aside $250 for the pump, belt, and flush (even that is a high estimate of the cost of those materials), that would mean that they are charging between $175 and $230 per hour to work on your SUV. I would recommend that you see if a male relative or friend can ask for a quote for the same work as I feel they are trying to rip you off. When I was in the Navy, a local repair shop charged my wife almost $900 for the replacement of a $50 ignition part that took 5 minutes to replace. When I returned from that deployment, I asked them for a quote for the same work and they gave me a written quote of $150.
Q: I drive a 99vw jetta and the coolant was leaking from it i took it to a repair shop they said the water pump was bad and that the seals on the water pump where bad that was defiantly where the coolant was leaking from. I replaced the water pump and drove my car this weekend no troubles, then this afternoon my coolant light came on and i put coolant in my car and it just started trickling out i called the repair shop they said it may just be a loose hose or clamp, is this true or am i looking at something worse than the water pump that has to be replaced?? or would that issue have already came up when they where looking for where the leak was coming from before it was repaired? please help
The pump may have indeed been bad. Did the shop put on the new pump or did you do it yourself? If it was done by the shop, take it back and make them fix it correctly. You have already paid them for the work. If you did it yourself, it should be fairly easy to spot where the leak is coming from. It is also rare but possible that the pump you put on was bad out of the box from the parts store. Not likely...but slim possibility. Hopefully it is just a loose clamp or hose.
Q: I have a 2001 chevy malibu and need to know how to check if the water pump needs replaced. The engine has been running much hotter than normal and is leaking coolant.
Remove the belt and try to turn it by hand. If it makes a growling noise or you can feel roughness in the bearing, then you should replace the pump. Also, look for any leaks anywhere around the water pump that would suggest it needs replacement. If there's no roughness or leaks at the pump, look elsewhere for a leak. Also check your radiator cap to make sure it's holding the proper pressure. Also check your thermostat to make sure it isn't starting to fail. Check to make sure your radiator fans come on too.
Q: no water is running my deep well pump kicks on every 15 min. it runs for 1-2 min when it kicks off then a noise like someone threw a ball against the house. can you help
Where is the noise coming from? The pipes, pressure tank, or starter box. I assume you have a submersible pump? If it is the starter box it could possibly be that your pump may be at fault pulling to much amperage and causing the starter box to make those kind of noises when it cuts out. Well pumps typically last for 15 to 20 years with the odd exception. Another thing to check is your pressure tank. If it is one of those old galvanized ones it needs to be charged with air regularly as they tend to become water logged giving you very little water in between pump cycles. Another thing you could try is cleaning the points with some emery on the pressure switch. They tend to become corroded and can cause problems with the pump operating at all.
Q: The water pump gasket in my '98 Forester (130k) recently began to leak, and I will be replacing it in the next couple days. I noticed a stream of bubbles in my overflow container, though, and am wondering if it might be bad head gaskets making the air bubbles. The bubbles only appear after the engine is warmed up, like after a drive around town - there aren't any bubbles when the engine is cold.Is it possible that these air bubbles are coming from the leaking water pump? I hope so, because I'd much rather replace the pump than the head gaskets!
Yes it is from the leaky water pump. Because it is leaking it will most prob be sucking air. If it was a head gasket you would notice it when cold as well
Q: Is a 3000 watt generator sufficient to power a 3/4 horsepower water pump?My house has a 3/4 horsepower pump that it uses to pump water from the well to the house. I want to purchase a generator that will be sufficient to power this pump in a power outage. Is 3000 Watts sufficient?
1 hp is 746 watts; however start up and power factors need to be considered. A 0.75 hp motor at steady state draws 560 watts at steady state; to overcome start up assume you will need about 1,100 watts (1.1 KW). Your generator is 3 KW so it should do well.
Q: i am not sure whether the water pump is bad or how much water should come out of exhaust.
take it in.
Q: A mechanic replaced my timing and other belts on my 2001 Mitsubishi Galant 4 cylinder today but not water pump. He said the water pump looked good. All the other mechanics I talked to told me they had to replace the water pump. This mechanic said the belts were not connected to the water pump in this car and therefore the water pump was ok. The car has about 100500 miles on it. Is this bad or should I call him back and ask him why he didn't change the water pump. I don't want to pay more later.
the reason why we tell people too replace the pump is because all the parts in the way are already off when you change the timing belt so its just a case of good measure and preventative maintenance not too mention it makes a little more money
Q: Hubby is trying to change the water pump on our GMC Jimmy. He cannot get the fan off to access the water pump. What is the trick here? He's trying to do more of the maintenance on our cars to save $$$$ --but it sure is a bear!
If the oil psi is dropping to 0psi and the oil is topped off and the engine starts making a noise when it goes to 0psi it is eat-her something in the oil pan getting around the pick up tube or the tub is loose or cracker or the oil pump is going out , and if the engine oil has not been changed on time it will do that , and i have seeing the the oil relive valve stick or the spring brake and co-use to do the same and i think the oil pump is in th front cover in front of the engine block , if this was me i would get a chiltons repair manual to repairer this proper , because low oil psi , you will need to replace rod and mane bearings, and if you don't do some thing soon you r going to have a big boat anker.good luck.
Q: Hello, I have a 1996 Cavalier and it's got a small coolant leak by the water pump so I figured I'd replace it. I called around a little bit and one quote was $250. I'm sord of handy and have a few hours on Saturday is it that hard? I heard it's just a few bolts? Thanks!!
It's easy as hell. Should take about an hour, maybe 2. Depends on how 'handy' you are. Before you replace the water pump, check your hoses. Make sure it's not them that's leaking.
