- I think average is about $15 to $20 per sq yd. I did pay a little more for the carpeting upstairs than I did downstairs, because I knew I'd replace the downstairs carpet sooner. I picked out a $25/sq yd carpet for upstairs, and I thought that was expensive. I think $30 is WAY too expensive.
