- I am talking old fashion bearings, I use auto parts cleaner, soak them overnight. Then repack if they look good. Use a container you can shake, like a jar.
- Q: Recently it moves from side to side a bit when you are driving. I has a horrible screeching sound when you drive. and it has a popping sound to it. I've been told it was the bearings. Possible the brakes too. I really don't want to give up on this classic car. So could anyone tell me or give me links to how to fix up the car. PRETTY PLEASE. - there is more to it than that, first of all if you need pistons and bearings then more likely than not there will be excessive wear on the crankshaft, and also you are going that far, the heads should be rebuilt, because putting a new short block, with old worn out heads, invites more problems. Besides, it would be cheaper for you to buy a long block, and have it installed, than pull the motor and take it apart, add a few parts and put back together an undependable collection of old and new and worn parts. Personally I would put a later model 5.4 chevy small block engine, transmission with the wiring harness and computer. this will make a screaming quick firebird, with about the same fuel mileage.

- this is my method... Buy: a gaterade bottle, or a bottle big enough to fit a bearing....3 in 1 oil which will cost 2-3 bucks..and rubbing alchohol, but it has to be at least 90% alchohol or more. 1st. find a bottle like a gaterade bottle, or a bottle big enough to fit bearings in it. 2nd. put the bearings in the bottle then pour rubbing alchohol, which you can buy for 3-4 bucks (MAKE SURE ITS 90% ALCHOHOL, cause water will make it rust.) 3rd, shake the bottle for 5 minutes then pour out the alcohol. 4th. dry the bearings 5th. use 3 in 1 oil to lubricate the bearings and make them spin more freely this will clean your bearings,make them last longer, and spin a bit more faster..
- Q: I have a shaft that is in a vertical position. I need to support the axial (vertical) and the radial (side) force. I can understand how to support the side force with the ball bearings. I would just slip the bearings through the shaft and then create some kind of housing and bolt it to a structure close to it. But the radial force? The ball bearings I have do not have any type of set screw, so their is nothing to lock it into place.
- There are pressure bearings which are installed (in your case) at the bottom of a vertical rotating shaft to support the weight or downward pressure of it and reduce friction. Those bearings are usually roller or needle bearings. I have seen them also with steel balls but having an identical top and bottom plate or ring. It is unwise to use regular ball bearings with an inner and outer ring for that.

- Q: 2005 Sport Trac, 2WD, automatic trans w/ aprox 80K milesA few months ago there was a grinding sound from the rear of the truck that increased with speed (a whomb, whomb, whomb type sound) and even a clicking when I reversed. I was doing my breaks and noticed there was some play in the wheel when pushing/pulling but also that when I turned the wheel (both wheels up and trans in neutral) there was some side to side play (not sure if that is normal or not). Also when driving the truck slowly wobbles at low speeds and begins to shake at higher speeds. I noticed that this isn't constant and seems to greatly reduce after a left hand turn. One place told me it was the differential but I am not sure and don't want to spend a bunch of money if it's a bearing as I can replace the assembly myself for under $200.
- Sounds like outer wheel bearings but it could be the differential bearings as well. The only way to know is replace the wheel bearings and see if the noise stops. I'd check the gear oil level as well since if you were low on oil that would kill the bearings and the differential. If it's low make sure you add the specific kind for your axle.
