- Q:I just got an estimate to professionally steam clean a 9 * 12 turkish area rug - the estimate was for $440 which seemed high to me, but I have no reference point - is this a reasonable price? I am located in New York City - Thanks!
- I'll go out on a limb here and guess that $440 is NOT high ... first, it's an Oriental ... second, you are in NYC. And ... it's a big rug! Oriental rugs need to be handled with the utmost care. I would call around to several places for price quotes. I don't actually have a point of reference, either ... but I'm betting that (in your area, at least) you'll find that the price you were given is well within ballpark range. Did you buy the rug new? If so, call the retailer and ask for a recommendation. You may be able to get a break on the price for a referral from the rug seller. If you bought the rug secondhand (or bought it mass-market ... or don't know where the rug originally came from) ... you're probably stuck paying top buck, but BE SURE to get the estimate in writing before you have any work done on the rug!

- Here is what I would do: Step 1: Wash the patio until it is very clean--use a tiny bit of dish soap if you have to. Step 2: Lay the rug out on the patio and get a good carpet shampoo and clean the rug outside on the patio (no water tracked through the house) with the garden hose. Step 3: Hang the rug in a safe clean area to dry. Try to avoid areas where kids and pets could knock it down or get it dirty. Also, avoid hanging it somewhere where dirt could get blown onto it. Remember, the sun can cause discoloration. Step 4: After rug is dry, bring inside and place back on the floor in the respective place. Spray the rug with Febreeze fabric refresher until it is damp. It should dry within 2-3 hours (max) and it will be fresh and clean. Tip: If it is supposed to rain or it looks/smells like it is going to rain, don't wash the rug. You need to allow it adequate time to dry. You will have a mildew smell in the rug if you don't. Also, if there is no moving air outside and it is really humid, the rug could still get a mildew smell. Make sure that the place that you choose to hang the rug to dry has moving air. Good luck! - If you want it done properly you should hire someone to do it because they do have the right tools for the job. If you just want to fly at it and try on your own, then there are a few things you should probably know. Make sure you've installed the wood tacking boards correctly as they will be of no use to you if you put them in the wrong direction I'm sure. when you install your carpet make sure that there is a little space between the edge of your carpet and the wall (you can trim later) because over time your carpet is going to stretch and you'll get ripples in it if it's jammed right against the wall. The space will be covered by base boards anyway. If you don't have any seams to worry about, that's better. If you do you may have to contact someone who knows what they are doing. There is like a sticky/glue tape that will go on the underside of the carpet to join them together and then you have to use a hot iron in order to activate the glue...I wouldn't recommend trying this on your own. Think of it this way...worst case scenario is that you install it and have to later get someone to come in and do it correctly. I'm sure it will look great and kudos to you for attempting your own renovations. It's apparent that you looked into how to lay carpet as most people have no idea about the wooden strips you use to keep the carpet in place....or they will skip the underlay and just throw new carpet on top of old. --- Oh and by the way there is a special tool used to stretch your carpet ...I imagine it's called a carpet stretcher lol, but I'm not sure and that too looks like a job for professionals. When my mom installed her bedroom carpet she did so without the tools, and it turned out perfect, not a single flaw.

- I like the idea of taking it from a closet. Just want to forewarn you that the pet deposit is likely not going to be returned to you. And, if it were my carpet your pet ruined/damaged, I'd likely ask for it to be replaced- same condition as when you moved in- with normal wear and tear. I think puppy is going to cost you a bit for this chewing.

- Cut out the burnt section and glue in a piece of scrap carpet! Go to a carpet store and get a carpet repair tool. They're only a few bucks. Some adhesive disks and carpet glue. Now take your cutting tool and cut out the damaged section. Be careful to not cut through the carpet fibers themselves. Next cut a replacement section from the donor carpet also being careful not to cut the carpet fibers. Next you will peel off the cover on the adhesive disk and place it in the empty hole. Now put some glue around the edge of the hole and insert your patch trying to match the grain of the carpet. (Carpet has a distinct grain). Press the patch firmly into place and put a weight on top of the area. Let it dry at least twenty four hours before putting the carpet to use.

- It is very durable, but not very stylish. We just bought new carpet and the comment was made by the sales rep that most men buy berber because it is durable. We ended up buying Frieze which is a very fashionable style carpeting. It's not plush, not berber, but is kinda casual; it's life twisted loop carpeting. And it doesn't show traffice pattern much at all. Ours looks like the sample below. Good luck deciding!
