Rarely do BMW water pumps leak a lot. Most would not even leak when pressure-tested by a mechanic (for a few minutes). But a leaky pump would leak when the engine runs and specially when it is pressurized and allowed to sit overnight. Usually the seal itself does not cause the leak. It is the wornout bearing which allows the pump's shaft to wobble and thus allow coolant to leak. Overheating due to air getting inside the cooling system is big trouble. But bigger trouble still is a catastrophic failure due to failed/seized water pump bearings. Have it replaced. And the previous statement that your car is about due for hoses and thermostat replacement is correct. There is even a chance that the thermostat is allowing the cooling system to get over-pressurized and thus results in coolant leaks. Replacing the pump is good, replacing the thermostat in addition is better, replacing also the hoses is best. If you can afford it.

When I change timing belts, I don't change water pumps. Since I do my own maintenance, I'm willing to spend another 4-5 hours tearing things apart to change the water pump if it subsequently fails. If I were paying a shop to do it, I'd have all the work done. Since the water pump is a moving part with bearing, its going to fail. Will it fail at 80k or 180k? Hard to tell. If you're willing to take the chance that it won't fail and are willing to pay the extra money to take it all apart again if it does, then don't change it. A better way to think of it might be in terms of how long you plan to own the vehicle. If you want to keep driving it another 100k miles, then I'd change it out now, if you plan on selling/trading it in in a couple more years, guess I'd be more inclined to skip it. Hope this helps.

Sounds like a typical air lock, you need to bleed the system, should hopefully be a bleed screw often running off heater pipe at the back of engine! Check to see if top and bottom pipe are hot when running, or heater not blowing warm usually a good indicator of air in system! Just found this! To bleed the cooling system on a 1997 Chevy Cavalier, there is a small brass bleeder valve located on the heater pipe that runs along the front of the motor (metal pipe). Open that valve a couple turns and pour in the antifreeze in the reservoir tank until antifreeze starts dripping from the bleeder hole. Tighten the valve, but be careful not to tight too tight, they are soft brass and break easy. Finish filling the reservoir to the Full Cold mark. After driving the car at least one time and letting it cool down, check the antifreeze level on the reservoir and fill as needed.
