- Q:I recently moved house and my real fix fur rug isn't large enough to cover the floor in my room, so my question if, if I go and kill some foxes tonight, how do I skin them and how do I attach the skins to the rug without making it obvious where i have sewn them on?Also, what shall I do with the remains, is fox edible?
- Yes fox is edible... but save the brain. Tanning a hide is a skill that requires practice. I can tell you how but I suggest practicing on something you don't plan to have every guest at your house have a look at. Also some sewing skill would be needed to mend the two rugs together, and foxes aren't large animals so more than one will almost definitely be needed. To tan a hide: Skin the animal at the leg and stretch the skin out very taunt. You will need a tool for scraping ( something sharp but rounded enough not to tear the hide). While the hide is stretched, scrap of the epidermis of the skin with your tool (on the side without fur obviously). Its important to keep the hide wet during this process. Keep a bucket of water nearby to wet it down with. After the hide dries from anywhere from a day or a week (still stretched) untie it and cut it to the size you need it. Now rinse it in a mixture of a half - a whole gallon of water and the foxes own brains (yes, the brains). Rinse, wring it out, rinse again. Over and over and over until your tired. Next stretch the skin out some. Give it a tug with a partner to loosen it up. Then you have to smoke the skin with a dark smoke (most likely from old rotten wood). This will cause the white skin to tan (hence, tanning the hide). Tan the fir side as well but no where near as much as the inside of the skin. Once its a golden brown you can sew it onto your first rug. Whew lol. This is just the general jist of tanning a hide. There are many other methods that I don't know about. - It can not be too much so first of all scrape it all off the carpet and then use some spray removers and a brush. Some work really well and dry to a powder to hoover off or take some warm water with some washing up liquid in it and either brush the stain away or use a cloth to do the same. You might need to do it a couple of times but the stain you have is not a bad one and it should lift. After the wash use clean water to rinse the soap off and blot dry with towel or paper. If you use tissue paper you will see when the paper gets dry. Just make sure when you get rid of the stain that you go past the mark it has left and it should not leave a ring.

- The carpet can be cut to any size (s) or shape you want. Most all carpet store will have access to binding or a few will do it on site. - The softest carpet feel is obtained by purchasing either a quality textured or frieze carpet and a thick pad. Berber is obviously a bad choice in your case. Look for carpets that have a lot of fibers per inch and that have a good warranty, at least 15 years (wear, stain, fade). Feel the samples. Some fibers are much softer than others even when made from the same material because of differences in manufacturing and even dye.

- Well I had a huge rug 13 ft X 10 ft and it cost me $250.00, it was the king they pick up and clean and bring back. But Im sure you can get the stain out yourself. I raised 2 kids and a grandbaby and I have many times. You got a couple of options; You can take it outside and hose it down with the water hose and let it dry, it will dry faster if you drape it over a fence or car or picnic table. Or you can get carpet cleaners like Resolve in any store, I have used the one a dollar tree and I think it works just as well, Id vacuume it as well as I could first, spray foam either all over or just on the spot and rub a wet wash cloth or rag or sponge over it until it comes clean. Its alot cheaper and faster than professionals. But if you want to you probably could get a company to come out and steam clean it on your floor for about $99.00.
