- Q: I just recently moved and the carpet in the bedroom is brown. I don't have the money to replace it, but I would like to brighten it. I can tell at one point it was a very dark brown and has lightened up over time. I would like to know how to darken it without having to replace it yet. Is there a way to darken it?
- It would be less expensive to replace the carpet, using a carpet remnant available from a specialized carpet store. Take your room measurements with you and look around. These carpet stores are anxious to sell these remnants and will take a reasonable offer on them. Nylon carpet is perhaps the easiest carpet to dye and going from a light color is the best choice when dyeing this fiber. Olefin carpet cannot be dyed. Polyester carpets, made from recycled plastic bottles is relatively inexpensive to begin with and is, in my estimation and experience, not worth dyeing. If you follow through with the replacement, carefully examine the carpet pad to see if it to should be replaced. Removing the old carpet and pad is relatively easy and something you can do your self with a utility knife. Cut it in smaller pieces from the backside to make removal easier. If you shop for a remnant, make an offer they cannot refuse.

- In the US--Usually, the carpet they remove when they replace it with the new carpet is discarded. If the owner of the home didn't care to keep it, the carpet store could take it with them. They could resell it and install it somewhere else if they found a buyer. But if they are selling it as new, and it is not, they could be sued for fraud. Some states may have specific health and safety laws prohibiting them from reselling the carpet, but I don't know of any.
- Q: i have 5 rugs and they are pretty grubby now, can i wash them in the washing machinegt;?
- I have a sheepskin rug that I have washed, never thought about using Woolite however I am sure that works great :). Since it is a hair like fur I actually have used a little shampoo in the washer with it. It worked just fine, I was a bit nervous to put the rug in the dryer so i just let if hang for a while to air dry and also use a brush to bring the life back into the fur.

- A rug won't help. Best remedy is about an hour every few days with a shedding blade. You should take the rug off unless it's very cold. Especially if it's with other horses, it doesn't need a rug. My mare has never worn a rug in her life, and she only has two pasture mates. The way horses mostly shed is the hair comes off a little a first, then a whole lot. The more you groom, the faster and heavier the shedding.
