Q:My rug is a short, runner rug in front of our outside doorway. The material is shaggy and I'm not sure if I can put in the washer...?

What backing is on the rug? What were the cleaning instructions when you bought it? If you put it in the washer, use a gentle cycle. Is there a tag on the back of it or can you go back to the store where you bought it and look at the cleaning instructions on the unsold rugs? If it's too bulky for your washer, soap it up on the driveway and rinse it with the water hose.

Q:I have carpet in the living room, it's not a big room, average size. I have a BISSELL steam cleaner, the one with the bristles, and I can empty the tank 5 times and keep going over the room and it still comes up dirty (the water) Is this normal? It's not possible to clean it until the water comes up clean is it? This carpet is probably old, we moved in a year ago so I am not sure how old it is.

Clean the best you can.. You d be absolutely shocked at the amount of dirt is under the carpet and pad even in the cleanest of houses.. I ve pulled up many carpet and the home owners are appalled at the amount of dirt that is under there. GL

Q:I purchased an old wool, floral patterned, pile area rug (approx. 8' x 10') at an auction. It needs cleaned and there is not a professional cleaner in my area. Can I clean it with a traditional steam cleaner using cold water? If so, what about the beater bar? Do I need to diconnect that so I don't fuzz the wool? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I am a pro carpet cleaner and have been in the business for 10 years, do not take your wool rug to the laundry mat and do not use your steam cleaner on it. Wool is a very delicate fiber and can therefore be easily damaged. I would definitly see if there is any professional carpet cleaners that will come and pick it up from your house. If your area rug is not to expencive however you may be able to get away with just using the steam cleaner with no beater bar and just water, but if it is expencive the the only way to go it to have a pro do it.

Q:my 1yr old always manages to find bits on the floor and eats themhow is it i can vac 3 times a day and yet she always finds something to chew on off it??does your child love carpet food as much as mine and does it actually do any harm?

lol.. not only does my son like carpet food, but he likes carpet! We have frieze (sp) it's like a short shag carpet, he I will see him chewing on something and I run and get it out of his mouth.... it's carpet. If I see him eat food from the floor I try and take it, but I know he is fine. All kids put things in their mouth they shouldn't. Heck, tyler had the dog ball in his mouth yesterday......gross!!! Q:Is one of the two supposed to be softer than the other? More durable? Easier to clean? I want a sisal type area rug. I want a casual look that would go with my blend of tradtional and contemporary decor. I do not want a scratchy rug with fibers that quot;stick upquot; like bristles on a brush! I thought the sisal would be softer and more pliant to the touch, but a decorator friend said the jute is what I want.I believe seagrass is the scratchy, bristle-y fiber, and I don't want that. I want a sleek, tailored look.Any suggestions or ideas?

Sisal rugs tend to be more durable. They are both natural fibers. I believe sisal wool rugs are what you're looking for. Sisal - the strength and durability of natural fibers, Wool - the soft underfoot feel. Sisal wool rugs have the best of both worlds - durable and soft. Jute is also soft, one of the softest natural fiber rugs. I guess the best way to compare the textured feel is to go into a rug shop and feel the difference of the materials.

If you're asking how to install new carpet, think carefully before you attempt it. Carpet mechanics have several years experience before they can do it professionally. You need the proper tools. A power stretcher is a plus. The ability to use the proper tension so as not to tear the carpet but assure a tight stretch. A knee kicker a must., and the ability to kick it without damaging your knees. Even those experienced have this happen. If not used properly it can tear out carpet fibers, leaving a bald spot/s. A seaming iron a must, and the knowledge to use it without melting the pile of the carpet. Using the proper heat on the seaming tape. Proper carpet knives, and the ability to properly cut a true and straight edge when seaming fills, and at doorways. Following the wires of the pile when trimming. Knowledge in cutting Across wires in order to make good seams. Proper trimming shears to trim carpet pile when necessary. Wall trimming tool, and ability to trim the correct amount of salvage in order to tuck, without scarring walls. If tack strip needs any replaced, the knowledge to place them at the correct distance from the wall to suit the type of carpet. Ability to hammer nails in the strip without hitting the walls. Strip can be as close as 1 /1/4 from the wall. Inexperienced installers have damaged walls. Problems can be encountered with concrete and must be solved properly. Padding will likely be replaced and adhered to the floor at a correct distance from tackstrip. This is not a job for amateurs. Carpet is too expensive today to screw it up. You could injure your back and knees.

Q:I was hoovering today and I took a closer look at the carpet when I realised my carpet is full of little white cm long bugs. I searched on google and they are saying it is carpet bettle larve. But looki g at the pictures of these beetle larve they look nothing like them. To give you a picture they are pure white cilinder shapes that have a sort of tuft on each end. They are a cm long and I'd expect a mm in diameter. Please help

Q:I have a white carpet that has gotten dirty over the years. The color has just generally changed to a dirtier white. It's kinda dark and you can easily tell which parts of the carpet haven't gotten dirty over the years as they are perfectly white. I also have some stains. I tried bleaching some parts of the carpet which did actually work, but that left clean spots that look weird compared to how the rest of the carpet is. I would bleach the whole thing but it created such a strong smell last time that I couldn't sleep in my room. Is there a way to generally whiten the entire carpet with the supers strong smell of bleach. Preferably a way to do this with household items. Thank you.
