Q:Its all gonna get covered with mortar anyway when I put the tile on, right? So.... Is it NECESSARY to mortar the joints before hand or not?
Nothing is necessary of you don't care about water damage. If you care about doing a good quality job that insures that the area is watertight then mud the joints. Remember that water is the worst enemy of a house next to termites. You would be surprised to see what a hairline crack can do to the structure of a house. Not to mention the mold and the insurability of a home. Water damage on an insurance record is shared on a national database of insurers and when its there, good luck every getting insurance.
Q:Or do I also use some sort of adhesive between the drywall and the cement board?
attach with screws or nails.
Q:I've already got the cement board down, taking it back up would mean messing with the toilet flange, which means plumbing, and that sucks. Plywood was in pretty good condition. Thanks in advance!
Ya, you should make sure that you have enough screws in it so it doesnt shift. thats the main purpose of thinset between the cementboard and subfloor. If your using hardibacker it shows you were every screw should go about 25 screws in each. You also should thinset the joints, just like drywall.
Q:or can i leave the seams alone? if i have to tape them what tape do i need and what compound do i need? thanks for any help!
There's no need to tape the seams of cement board, as long as you get a good close fit it should be ok. You've made a wise choice using cement board, at least on the lower half of the shower enclosure area, greenboard, while being somewhat moisture resistant is not impervious to water damage. It should be used above the cement board and will do a good job there. The seams in it will need to be taped, at least above the top edge of the surround.
Q:Is the Etter board available for exterior finishes?
Often used for external wall panels (with moisture, waterproof, sound effects), bathroom partition, outdoor roof roof, external wall insulation board, interior decoration, smallpox, etc .; can also replace the use of gypsum board used in the decoration of the substrate.
Q:how to make cement backer board for bathroom wall tiling?
the other people answering are inexperienced. forget them. leave the drywall that is already there. install the tile with an upgraded mortar like flexbond ($30 a bag) as opposed to regular mortar at $15 a bag. the tile will be going nowhere, vent fan or no vent fan. put your tiles pretty tight together to avoid the use of alot of grout. water gets in through the grout lines which makes the tiles come loose. seal the grout with a can of grout sealer every so often so moisture doesnt get behind the tiles.
Q:Cement board in Malaysia?
you can find cement board sell in most hardware shop in malaysia
Q:What is the national standard for the thickness and hardness of indoor residential cement?
From the technical point of view how to deal with the wall: shovel now is the cement mortar level, re-do
Q:do I need to put down a vapor barrier or cement board or can the hardwood be glued down and the tiles with thinset? Also what type grout should I use on floor and wall tiles?
Porcelain or clay tiles can be glued directly on concrete. For hardwood, I suggest a floating floor over a vapor barrier.
Q:Our contractor says green board is required for his corian shower because it is coved and waterproof. Is he right? The City says cement board is a new requirement because mold can get in. However, they will accept the manufacturers recommendation. We want to follow the building code.
Absolutely, spend $30 more and use cement board. As a builder, I always line the studs with plastic, which overlaps the shower pan, then screw cement board over the plastic overlapping the shower pan (usually PVC product), then use red guard to seal seams and screw holes, then apply thinset mortar for tile, or mastic for corian, then seal all joints with grout sealer. It's your house and your money...stick to your instincts.
