Q:i am building an outdoor BBQ island and i live in an area that snow will fall for a couple of months. i have been researching cement backer board and i cant find any recommendations on snow fall and what type of tyle is best for this application. dont want to make this investment untill i know what i am getting into. any suggestions: I built a tile inlay on my deck for my grills. It's held up through 3 Wisconsin winters so far. I used pressure treated plywood for a base, then installed Durock over the plywood. Use Flexbond thinset for adhering the tiles. My neighbor owns a flooring store, and he set me up with an epoxy grout. You have to work it quickly to avoid a mess, but it's very durable. Hope this helps. EDIT: I would recommend using the plywood to give the Durock additional support. If you can enlarge the opening enough to wrap the Durock around the edge, you should be good. The tile and Durock should provide enough protection to keep the plywood from burning. If that will be an issue, you can screw some pressure treated 2x4's along the length of the metal frame, spaced every 16 or so, and then screw the Durock to that. This will give the top support so it won't deflect under the weight of the tile and snow, and keep the tile from popping. Good luck.

Q:This would be around the bathtub area. Not sure whether to use the same cement board tape and mortar at the ceiling line or to switch to regular wallboard joint compound. Which is correct? Thanks!: If your tiling the ceiling you can use thin set to tape that corner joint. If you were not tiling the ceiling it d be different. Q:I'm my history day exhibit board, and I used rubber cement, but the rubber cement stained the background paper I am using. Now, I have to move things around and organize my exhibit, and the stains are showing! How can I get them to go away??? Help!: Sorry but the stains are there to stay. You might try using some cornmeal or flour and let it set on the stains. They might pull some of the oily residue out of the paper but it won't take it all out. You might have to paint over the stains.

Q:I'm looking to install siding on my home and just looking for answers to the obvious concerns....... maintenance, longevity, and energy efficiency>: From an evergy efficency standpoint, neither has enough R value to even enter into the decision. With vinyl siding, you can add a rigid foam insulation behind the siding prior to installation that will increase the R value and some high end vinly comes with a foam insulation already laminated to the back. Hardi Board makes a pre-painted siding that has a 15 year warranty on the paint job. It doesn't ding, crack, or blow off in a strong wind. Plus, it looks like authentic wood siding (but much less expensive) However, you will pay substantially more than vinyl siding. For most people it comes down to price. When given all the facts, fiber cement is by far the superior product but if its not in your budget then vinyl siding is a respectable alternative.

Q:after installing my bathtub do i use 1/4 in. or 1/2 in. cement board for surrounding before ceramic tiling?: 1/2 will hold up better to the weight of the tile and someone banging into it.

Q:how to install cement backer board behind a bath tub?: usually regular sheetrock screws will work. just as long as you don't break the backer board to much but you still need to have them slightly countersunk.
