- Q:Its all gonna get covered with mortar anyway when I put the tile on, right? So.... Is it NECESSARY to mortar the joints before hand or not?
- Nothing is necessary of you don't care about water damage. If you care about doing a good quality job that insures that the area is watertight then mud the joints. Remember that water is the worst enemy of a house next to termites. You would be surprised to see what a hairline crack can do to the structure of a house. Not to mention the mold and the insurability of a home. Water damage on an insurance record is shared on a national database of insurers and when its there, good luck every getting insurance.
- Q:why does concrete block crumble but driveways and sidewalk do not?I don't have a driveway so basically i want to build a flat portable surface, made out of cement that my jack-stand (for my car) can stand on so the jack-stand wont have to be put directly in the grass.I would need it for the time that i need to take the tires off. any suggestion?

- Cement board is only 1/2 thick, concrete would be at least 2 ( probably 6 thick) you will know the difference by taping it with a hammer. You can remove the existing tiles and install new tiles onto the existing concrete. If any concrete is broken or damage, you will have to patch the broken concrete, let dry, and install tiles 24 hours later. Wait 24 hours before you grout.
- Q:We are building a new house and I am going to install tile in the bathrooms myself, we have the drywall hung and will be sanded in the next day or two. My question is, can I go ahead and hang the Cement backer board in the showers? or do I need to wait until the drywall is sanded or primed? Thanks :o)
- You can hang it anytime, but with the sanding of the drywall comes a lot of dust all over every thing, that you will have to clean off the cement board for good adhesion.
- Q:Installing a shower in my basement, and am framing around a fiberglass 36 square shower base. should I put it flush against the frame and then attach cement board (it will overhang) or leave room to slide cement board between base and frame? Thanks!
- The framing goes tight to the shower pan, and the cement board goes down to the lip of the pan, but not over it. IMPORTANT: do not run the cement board over the lip or this will cause a bow at the bottom all the way around. Your tile will run down to the shower base. If you ran the cement board behind the shower pan the lip would stick out and when you tiled, the tile would be pushed out as described at the bottom row. I hope this makes sense to you.

- you can probrably use a self leveling floor prep if the floor is not too bad but that stuff is quite expensive if you need a lot of it. make sure you read the instructions and follow them.
