- Q:I am seeking to set porcelain tile on top of the hardibacker board once it is secured. If I have to remove the Barmaill plywood, does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this with ease? I assume its glued as well as screwed down.
- OK... You didn't specify whether you're doing a floor tile job or a wall tile job. If doing a floor tile job, here is the procedure: You can (but don't have to) apply thin set directly to the plywood and then lay and screw down the cement backer board onto the wet thinset. If your floors are pretty firm already, you don't even need to put the thin set on the plywood. Just screw the cement backer board onto the plywood. The thinset makers tell you to put thinset between the plywood and the backer board just to sell more product. It's an unnecessary step if your floors are already pretty stiff. Make sure you screw the backer board down and hit the floor joists underneath with the screws. Screws only going into the plywood is not sufficient. All screws must enter the joists, so get those marked before you start. Use thinset with a notched trowel on top of the backer board to lay the tile into.
- Q:Is it okay to install ceramic tile on greenboard, or is cement board necessary?
- You are going to have better luck in the long run with cement board, but if you are not looking long term then go with green.
- Q:could someone please recommend (a) thin set, manufacturer, brand, this is a bathroom application. perhaps a Lowe's or home depot product.
- Custom Building products, sold at Home Depot is what I ve used for years.. You can use the white or grey, just that the grey is just a bit cheaper too. For porcelains you ll want the Flexbond line in the Custom thin set. It s the one recommended for porcelains. Also in the past I ve used H B Fuller s Tec lines of thin sets. love that line, it mixes to a nice creamy consistancy. But its not as available to the public and more expensive. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
- Q:how do you join cement board from a shower wall to drywall?
- Other than being nailed to the same stud, it is not all that necessary that they be joined together. Just figure on the tile overlapping the drywall about a half an inch to kill the crack. You can mesh tape them together however and skim them flat with each other as long as you don't skim wide into the tile board area. You could do as little as just caulk the crack with silicone too.
- Q:do I have to remove the vinyl floor covering or can I just put the cement board over it
- You can lay right on top of the vinyl. Just make sure there are no uneven areas in the subfloor before you start.
- Q:do you have to tape cement board before tiling?
- you dont have to but the idea is to fill and fiberglass tape the seams keeping them ridged so that in years to come the grout doesnt crack out. Yet thats something rather new, you should be fine just filling any of the voids with mastic adhesive as you lay them. A portland cement mix works well on durarock, and the new backer board, though drywall quickset works just as well.
- Q:Why plastic materials use glass fiber reinforced
- Its plastic is relatively brittle, in order to fall resistance, compression, increase strength and toughness. It is a reason to add steel to the inside of the cement board. Notebook shells usually add fiber.
- Q:The difference between cement fiberboard and cement pressure plate
- Fibreboard' name emphasizes the reinforced material 'fiber'; 'pressure plate' name emphasizes the production process, the use of presses on the board green pressure, squeeze out the water and compaction, improve the board density and strength. 'Cement fiber board 'Is a more traditional name, but in recent years is also known as' cement pressure board'.
- Q:This would be around the bathtub area. Not sure whether to use the same cement board tape and mortar at the ceiling line or to switch to regular wallboard joint compound. Which is correct? Thanks!
- Youve got the right idea. It's called sanded caulk and it should be available in a color that matches your grout. Just be sure the bottom of your backer board is inside the lip of the tub and 1/4 above it so it won't wik moisture. As far as the why, it's mainly cosmetic. Good luck
- Q:I need to cut a curved piece of cement board. Will it work to score it with a utility knife, then break it? Thanks.
- Yes it cuts just like drywall, scrore then snap.Score a bit deeper though.
