FAQ

Hello All, I have an electrical equipment (face steamer) which was purchased in India (220 - 240V) and wanted to check, if I could connect this to an electrical outlet in US (producing 110V). Would this cause any damage to the equipment or the outlet ?
yes, okorder
I am wondering what happens when you have accidentally connected the negative cables to positive and the positive cables to negative. I have boat that has to two marine batteries and i am wondering if you were to do this will it screw things up and break things?
It depends on the details of how you mis-wired the batteries and what equipment you tried to run with the batteries mis-wired. Many devices have some built-in protection against reverse polarity, so there might not be any damage at all. If you mis-wired between the batteries, you could have damaged the batteries. If you wired them so that they were in series, you doubled the voltage on things that were connected. Light bulbs, starter motor/coil in the boat motor, electric motors will probably survive a short time in that configuration, but their lifetime is probably shorter now.
Before anyone blindly answers this, I'd like to first request that only people in the power transmission industry answer, as they are the only ones likely to know.I have a customer who is asking to mount several very large pieces of electrical equipment 15 feet in the air, mounted to a large structure. All of these equipment pieces are 5000 or more pounds and pad-mount by design. I am questioning this request on the basis of legality. Basically, I am curious to know, is there anything in the NEC that says mounting pad-mount equipment overhead is illegal? If so, I could really use a hint as to what section of the NEC code.
I don't believe that there is anything in the NEC that addresses this. Obviously, installing anything on a structure presents challenges that require the attention of a qualified structural engineer. And depending on the location, you could be facing some additional concerns. You would need to check on seismic activity in the area, and since 'pad mount' equipment has a broad profile, wind-loading could be more challenging if you have a wind-force specification to meet. The other issue you would need to consider is whether installation on a structure presents any particular safety concerns. Without knowing any more, my inclination would be to think that you might want to provide an enclosure around the structure to prevent civilians (rmeaning 'teenagers and drunk college students) from climbing it. Just out of curiosity - why does your client want this? We know that the client is always right - even when he insists to stupid things. I trust there is a good reason for asking for something that is bound to increase installation cost by probably 100%.
if you have worked in engineering consultancy, can you please tell me what are the typical projects you take and what exactly you do to help different firmswhy cant the firms do that stuff themselves , why do they need you badly ?
I do electrical engineering and do consulting for companies for the design of electrical systems of new plants. What my company and I do is to get the general power requirements for a large building or factory and specify what transformers, wiring, fusing, lighting, and power distribution methods they will need. Because of my education and my experience, I can provide a customer with the correct power and wiring specifications. The companies then can use my specifications to hire large electrical firms to install the electrical equipment and wiring. Firms normally do not do this for themselves because: 1. It is a one-time thing and they would not generally hire some one directly to do this. 2. Many firms cannot legally do this anyway because the state and local municipalities require a state-certified professional engineer and/or engineering company (like me) to design things like this. 3. It would be very costly and inefficient for a company to acquire this capability for a short amount of time. 4. On many types of consultancy, you want to hire another company because you may want a different point of view or perspective on the problem. 5. Many consultants can provide many types of engineering capabilities to bear on a problem, which can be impractical or expensive for companies to hire. Hope this helps Paul
I am a freshman of the engineering program at the university of Wyoming. Right now I am going into electrical because I wanted to stay in Wyoming and I thought that it would be easier to get a job in the production and distribution of electricity through something like Rocky Mountain Power. I don't mind doing the math and physics for electrical, but I am thinking that I would enjoy becoming a mechanical engineer. At the moment I believe mechanical is much more hands on, designing parts and testing them. I don't know what these two would lead into though. Electrical makes more money, but is that worth it? Also how hard would it be to get a job in this region with mechanical?
Electrical engineering. I don't know a lot about Wyoming but I know a lot about electrical engineering . EE is one of the largest branch of engineering majors and you can change your field of job whenever you want.
20 ft. off the ground, miles of steel rail supporting it, thousand's of gallons of diesel, electrical equipment all around.
Safe. You are surrounded by metal which forms a pretty good Faraday cage. The loco is well grounded via the rails. Apart from the bang of thunder you might not even notice the lightning. The Diesel fuel is in a steel container under the loco and even better shielded than you are.
I have some basic questions about SketchUP and AutoCAD.I'm totally new to 3D software and was planning to enroll in an AutoCADcourse before I found SketchUP and found out some self training with thefree tutorials might give me some good handicap before I go to the more advanced stage. My question is : Is it possible to transfer without any issue (bugs, etc.) a 3D file from SketchUP to Autocad and continue the work in AutoCAD, or vice-versa?What would be the best way for someone like me (that knows almost nothing) to get started?andwhat would be the best figures to start drawing for someone who eventually plans to design mainly electrical heavy equipments? Thanks a lot.
Yes, it is possible to transfer Sketchup files to AutoCAD. You will need to purchase the Pro version of Sketchup though. In my experience its best to always draw in the native program you intend to use. Something always gets lost or confused during any translation. Free Sketchup can import AutoCAD files, but not export them. AutoCAD cannot import Sketchup files. In my opinion Sketchup is really great for quick models artistic renderings. Sure you can spend a lot of time getting the model perfect but it will always look artistic, never real. My advise. Inroll in some AutoCAD training classes, buy some books, get the manual if possible, or at least consult the Help menu within AutoCAD(There are tutorials available within the Help menu also).
i want to measure the electrical consumption of my A.C,washing meachinefridge
You can buy a plug-in energy meter for a few pounds / dollars eg energymonitors-direct .uk/s
