- Q: Have a diesel engine that puts out average 3000 RPM and max's out at 3600 RPM I want to belt drive to a generator head that only needs 1800 RPM to operate at 60 hertz what size pulley should I use. Also for further info the shaft on diesel engine is 1 inch and the generator shaft is 42 millimeters
- If the engine is likely to be running for a long time, fuel consumption is likely to be important. You want to find out at what RPM the engine produces maximum torque.(If it's a car engine that will likely be related to the cruising speed of the car in top gear) All IC engines are most fuel efficient at the rpm for peak torque. If the engine can make enough power for your requirements at the rpm for peak torque, that's the rpm you should aim to run the engine at. Will depend on the engine of course, but peak torque is usually around about 1/3 of the rev range, I estimate that to be aprox 1800rpm [ie (3600-800)*1/3 +800 ] If aiming for 1800rpm for the generator, with an engine speed of 1800rpm, you don't need to change the rpm at all. That means the pulley's can be the same size, unless the belts slip (flat/ribbed belts slip aprox 3%- probably not enough for you to worry about) So that's the ratio sorted out. Physical size of pulley. All belts have a minimum diameter pulley which they can go around, so long as the pulley is larger there's no problem. Minimum size pulley depends on the thickness, and construction of the belt- and that depends on the power you're transferring via the belt. If you give some indication of the power you're wanting to transfer I'm, sure you get some additional help you'll probably need a governor for the engine to generate at 60Hz give or take a bit. Many diesel engines just have a max/min governor relying on the user to governing the rpm under varying load . You'll need fairly good control for electrically generation, but it needs be nothing much than releasing the throttle a little if the generator is running fast, and if the generator is running slow pressing the throttle. - Probably - with serious optimization - about the same as from gasoline/electric hybrids, maybe a little worse. Most people are as surprised as I was to find out the maximum theoretical efficiency of a diesel engine is about 50% while the maximum theoretical efficiency of a gasoline (otto cycle) engine is about 65%. It has to do with the diesel adding heat at constant pressure while the otto cycle engine adds heat at constant volume. Anyway, gasoline engines typically fall behind because the theoretical maxima are at infinite compression ratio with perfectly insulated cylinder heads, cylinders, and pistons. Diesel engines are capable of much higher compression ratios than gasoline engines, and the method of throttling gasoline engines has the effect of reducing the compression ratio even more. That has given diesel engines a reputation for efficiency and they are more efficient than turbine engines (about 40% max) and rockets (about 12% max). However, hybridization has allowed gasoline engines to reach efficiencies that are not very practical for diesels. The current generation Prius spends a lot of engine operation at 38% efficiency - the 2016+ is supposed to reach 40%. Diesels can't compete; although that represents only 61% of the theoretical max for gas engines it is 80% of the theoretical max for diesels, and that last bit of efficiency is the very devil to achieve. It would require entirely new materials and other major improvements. As the source says, Conventional gasoline engines have long run about 25 percent, diesels at 30 to 35 percent.

- A generator frequency cam be changed to 60Hz to 50Hz by changing its speed in rpm. One should remember that frequency ,f PN/120, Hence N120F/P, where N is revoultions per minute and P the number of poles.If you have a frequency meter, run the Diesel engine until the frequency registers only 50 Hz. the voltage registered may be lower than the desired terminal voltage. Here, you adjust the potentiometer trim until the desired voltage at 50Hz is attained. During operation of the unit, if the load is lesser than its rating, the voltage droop at the regulator has to be adjusted ,either increase or lower droop. If your generator is smaller than what I referred to, you will need a frquency meter and AC Voltmeter.
- Q: I have been researching EV cars and conversions and am wondering about using a generator instead of batteries. I am not an enviro-nut concerned about making an emission free vehicle, just one that is cheap to drive. It seems to me that using a generator to power the motor, although it would use gas, would be way more efficient than a normal gas engine that is in a car, and would be lighter than batteries. - You would be losing efficiency each time you transferred energy. Let's say a generator is 50% efficient (that is, half the energy contained in the fuel is transferred), then the electric motor is 50% efficient. Now you are already only getting 25% efficiency from the fuel. You lose efficiency because of various factors including friction and resistance. If you could get 100% efficiency, then you have just invented perpetual motion.

- With a permanent magnet DC motor (like from a battery powered toy) this will work fine. An AC motor is less likely to work, in normal operation the magnetic field that makes an AC motor work is produced by the electricity going into it, so if no power is going into it there is no magnetic filed to make it act as a generator, actually there might be a little stray magnetism or there are methods of getting it started with a pulse of external power, but the PM DC motor will be easiest . In short,yes you can use a motor for a generator but not just any motor
