Hi It is the same as a gas engine to maintain. Except for the fuel has to be water free. There will be a bowl some where to empty the water. Changing the oil etc. depends on how much you use it.
Q:I am a programmer. And a engineer. Me and my team have been working on a project. Can't really put much detail in the project other than it needs to be powered by something heavy. This project consists of land and air activity so it is a electricity killer. We have tried a very heave battery and charger_ failed. Gasoline isn't an option in this case. We have tested many forms of electricity- but non seem reliant. It's been about 3 months since we have tried. Any ideas? Or should we just give up.

Q:I was wondering if you guys know where to find an electrical generator that does not come with an engine. For example, I have found diesal generators that use diesal fuel to create current. I need something that can create current, but doesn't come with any mechanical input.I basically need an alternator that can produce power on the 30 kilowatt level.
your generator just needs to have the valves cleaned and maybe adjusted, gennies run at an even pace for a long time which builds up soot in the valves,,allowing to much air in ,, or the valves may need adjusting which would cause the same thing,,,
Q:I was talking with a friends and I know gas in a car or lawnmower etc will go bad after a certain amount of time. Then we got thinking about the massive amounts of diesel fuel in storage at hospitals etc, is there a storage life for it? and is it turned over all the time?
Scott: Since Diesel has a much lower vapor pressure than gasoline(7lbs/PSI) by far it is judged by flash point(under 130F degrees Properly stored(moisture and air is prevented from entering the tank) it can be stored almost indefinitely. These are the contaminates which degrade and evaporate regular gasoline. As gasoline evaporates( little or no problem with diesel at ambient temperatures) it leaves residues which form gums. In refineries and other business having sources of ignition, diesel is the prefered fuel for running equipment because is far less hazardous than gasoline which has a high vapor pressure and low ignition point, even a spark can set it off.

Suprisingly this will cause more wear than running it under load, if you need to charge batteries everyday assuming you don't have mains power for any legth of time I recommend you buy a generator for the job.
Q:China Diesel older generator. Hasn't been used for years, however, supposedly started biannually. Someone messed with the wiring. rewired much of the controls and all meters appear to be working. Have 240V no load, when applying a load to one leg, the 120V drops to 0V. Suspect the exciter not working. located the the 4 Stator cables and 2 smaller wires coming from generator. Suspect the 2 smaller are the excitation wires. According to the poorly edited Chinese to English manual. I have no idea which is F+ or F- and how important will it be to get this correct when applying the 12V as suggested in the trouble shooting guide??

This is used to estimate fuel consuption. First, pick a generator size, for example, a 10 kW generator. Divide this power by 2540. So, a 10 kW generator should need 10,000/2540 4 liters per hour. Now, multiply by the number of hours per day that you run it to determine fuel consumption per day. For 6 hrs per day, 4 * 6 24 liters needed. Actual consumption varies for different machines, environmental conditions, fuel composition, loads, etc, but this should be a realistic estimate.

Hydroelectric is a good source of power and is used around the country where there is a good source of water. Drawback is initial cost. Today Hoover Dam would probably cost a millions to build. Environmentally they are clean. Diesel Electric is used commonly in areas where there is a lack of water or funding to build hydro. The cost of Diesel is cheep er on the front end than hydro but is expensive to operate and keep up. Since oil will continue to go up and is environmentally damaging it is not a great choice. Steam generators are still in use. They are more expensive to build than Diesel. Coal is very dirty and new coal fired generators are not being produced. Wind Mill generation is a very old method of producing electricity and has a mediums cost to construct it is clean and has fairly inexpensive upkeep. It is estimated that one wind mill can provide the current needs of 40 homes. The Tennessee Valley Authority is now producing power from wind mills. There are also several companies in the West that have wind power. There of course is also atomic power. There is major construction costs and upkeep because of the danger from atomic materials. There is also a cost of getting rid of the used material used as it continues to be dangerous.
