- You can use a diesel generator set to generate power and the exhaust to heat or boil water. You could also use an air craft derivative gas turbine converted to diesel or jet fuel and make steam or hot water with the exhaust.

- the injection systems only variable is for the control of rpms during operation. during the start up process rpms are less than operation. yet the system delivers the same amount of fuel as the lowest setting. the fuel system, much like any other machine, is a constant. feed rate and pipe i.d. do not change magically. to throw in more fuel than the cyclinder can take would be destructive. variances can occur during hard starting situations (cold climates). this is the same as the choke on a car. diesels do not have this as they employ whats known as glow plugs which are essentially little plugs inside the cyclinders that preheat the chambers making it easier to start. since locomotives do not use this technique, this is why you will see them idling when not being used in a cold environment. in essence, its a royal b***h to start one when cold. never the less, to accurately know the fuel consumption rate (gph) at start up, you will have to contact the manufacturer to see if these figures are available. highly unlikely they would have these figures as opposed to actual operational gph which is where the do their testing.

The genrator needs to cope with a 180amp rated welder plus 110v power tools (grinder, drill etc) being used at the same time. The generator needs to be diesel powered not petrol. - It will probably take something like 6.6 KVA's to run it. Similar one's take a 220 VAC, 30 amp circuit. The Model 180 MIG welds up to 1/4 steel. 6 heat settings and infinitely adjustable wire speed control welds a wider range. Max. output 160 amps with 30% duty cycle. Requires 220 Volts 60 cycle 30-amp circuit.

- You will not be able to use a home generator to make electricity cheaper than the utility sells it to you. There is substantial economy of scale that the utility puts into play and frankly you just cannot compete. Typical utility cost of generation is 4 - 8 cents / KW hr; typical larger home generator cost of generation is over 20 cents / KW hr.

- Your idea of a diesel is good. Look on the back of both all appliances and find the plate that tells how many watts and amps they use and copy them down. Make a list of what will be plugged into the outlets and if possible get the amps and wattage of those and add it to your list, same with sump pump. Now take that list to a dealer and show it to them and they will figure out what size generator you will need. Do not guess what size generator you will need, most underestimate The size and often by a large amount. Let an expert that is in the business do the figuring. Most answers on here go by widely varying assumptions and uneducated guesses, depending on any of them could result in your system watts being way off. You might be paying for a system several times too large or small if you rely on these answers. Either way it could get very expensive and wasteful.
