- Q:I have a van and wish to kit it out with generator, welder and power tools. The genrator needs to cope with a 180amp rated welder plus 110v power tools (grinder, drill etc) being used at the same time. The generator needs to be diesel powered not petrol. The ones i've looked at are rated in Kva's. Not too sure how to work out how many Kva's i will require. Help please.
- It will probably take something like 6.6 KVA's to run it. Similar one's take a 220 VAC, 30 amp circuit. The Model 180 MIG welds up to 1/4 steel. 6 heat settings and infinitely adjustable wire speed control welds a wider range. Max. output 160 amps with 30% duty cycle. - The average American household uses 920 KWh per month (recent DOE stat.) Off grid is a very novel idea, if it was still 1970 or you live in a part of Missouri which would require utility lines brought to you at your expense. With that said the future of the U.S. is (hopefully) moving toward what is called a 'smart grid systems and net metering'. This is where your excess electric production will be returned to you in the form of a payment generated by your 'power plant home', unless you use it all up in your 'mobile power unit', i.e. your electric car. Going off grid isn't as easy as it sounds with needing a battery back up room etc. Also, if you are serious about off grid, then your home will need to incorporate the most efficient technology and passive solar design to keep your electricity demand down. - A factory operating from 8 am to 4 pm uses 80kWh or 10000w of electricity per day generated by diesel. It is possible to use a small diesel generator to generate enough power to run a motor. If that motor is connected to a large power generator, it will generate enough electricity to power the entire factory.

- You want to connect a 4 kw load to a 6 kw generator. As long as the 6 kw (6,000 watts) rating of the generator is accurate it should power the lamps fine. You're only using 66% of the generator capacity. There aren't any significant losses to worry about and no point in doing any calculations. They were done for you in the kw rating of the generator. Just don't use any extension cords that are too small for the lights.

- If the unit is rated 8000 VA, and the output is 6400 W. that hints that the through-put efficiency is about 80%. You need a generator that will supply at least 125% of the load you apply to the UPS.

- About 15KW is needed to run a welder. Preferable is a diesel drive unit. Read the label plate on the welder, it will give the maximum draw needed for the supply side. Double that for the generator rating needed.

- You will probably have to buy a voltage converter or a transformer. Either that or contact the generator manufacturer and find out if they make one that matches your voltage, frequency, and power factor needs.
