Q:portable generator efficiency?
First, nothing operates at 100% efficiency. You are converting angular rotation into electric power and in any conversion of power, you lose efficiency. 59% efficiency isn't that bad. Second, generators are measured at continuous power and peak power. Check your owners manual or look on the side of the generator. At peak power, you will find that the efficiency is greater.
Q:What is the difference in construction and operation of ATS that switches between electrical source?
There may be no difference. It will depend on the application. For example, if I specified an ATS that had the proper voltage and current capacities, the only other item of concern would be to determine if the transfer would be a make before break or a break before make type of transfer. In a make before break, it would mean the sources would be placed into parallel operating condition before one of the sources was interrupted. This would require the ability to synchronize the sources. Which means the frequency, voltage and phase relationship of the sources must match before they are placed into parallel service. On a break before make switch, usually only phase rotation and approximate voltage levels are of concern. Hope this helps, Newton1Law
Q:Current -carrying conductor question?
The answer to your question is, No. Fq* v*B*sin(theta) F: Magnetic force. q: Charge inside the conductor (in this case, that is causing the current). v: Velocity of charged particle. B: Magnetic Field. Theta: is the angle between the velocity vector and magnetic field vector (angle between v B). So if the current is in the same direction as the magnetic field, the angle between (v B) is zero or 180 degrees making sin(theta)0 which means F0 It experiences a force only when the current is perpendicular to the magnetic field or at least makes an angle theta with the field that is not zero or 180. what this means is there has to be a velocity component normal to the magnetic field.
Q:Jackup Rig Power Distribution?
Nice to have your Q, i am also a Jack up Rig Design Engineer. Ok. see 1st of Jackup rigs have diesel generators which provide power supply for the various electrical power requirements on rig. usually the voltage level is 6.6kV, 4.16kV, 690V or 600 V which is then further reduced upto 415V, 220V/127V as per load and client requirements since it affects the design and overall space required and size of rig as well. the generated power is 1st transferred to the main PMCC or MCC known as generator switchboards. from here the power is dirtributed to various other switchboards such as jacking MCC, drilling MCC, Ventilation MCCs, VFD panels (for top drive mud pump panels through VFD/SCR system) and other MCCs for other electrical loads. voltage is further reduced upto 415V/220V/127V for lighting and other lv loads using dry type transformers. oil filled trafos are not preferred since they r bulky and not feasible to have them on rigs since its in sea and also problem in maintenance. cables used are usually of XLPE or XLPO insulation. the configuration is as follows CU/XLPE or XLPO/Inner sheath (SHF)/Armour/Outer sheath (SHF), the inner and outer sheath has to be low smoke halogen free material, armour is usually bronze wire armour, usually cables used are all flame proof as per iec 60332, cat 3-22A and cables for emergency purposes are fire resistant as per iec 60331. hope this is fine.

that's not how fuel consumption is measured, unless you were to drive at the same speed for an hour. It is measured in MILES or KM per liter. That way you just fill your gas tank, pay attention to how much is in it, look at your odometer, and see how many miles until your tank runs out. Then divide number of miles by liters in your tank.

the reactors are right on the shore, the tsunami was right there. and yes it did wash over the plants. that's what caused the backup power to fail ! plus several fuel tanks washed away and water got in almost everywhere, however the containment units remained sealed, at least until the hydrogen steam pressure cracked them ! now the NRC reports there is radiation at deadly levels in the immediate area.japan is downplaying the crisis. and due to unconfirmed plutonium pollution, the area may be uninhabitable for 30,000 years or more ?
Q:building a small electric generator for storm outages?
A cellphone can also be charged with a little hand sized charger using a couple of AA Batteries. There are wind-up radios available. If you need light, Tino-sby has the right answer. Note: Diesel is best because the fuel is much less inflammable, and does not decay when stored for long periods. (Note that you can get fuel preservative additive in any good cay accessory shop if you go for gasoline fuel.)
Q:onan generator code 33?
This may sound stupid, but check the belt. Make sure it's actually on there. The Onan QD's sometimes throw a belt. I have seen them break too. Make sure that's on. You may have an internal water pump issue as well - impeller fell off, etc (rare but possible). Another issue could be a blocked radiator. If your radiator is blocked with sludge, you may not even know. I usually check various spots on the block, thermostat housing and radiator while running with a infrared temperature probe to see if it's actually getting hot BUT BE CAREFUL doing that because there's a risk of damaging your unit. That's actually a last resort thing. It may just be a bad high temp switch. But make sure everything else is right first. Full radiator, belt, t-stat (you already did). Oh, I just thought - make sure you have the right temp t-stat in there. The one I have in the shop (1997 7.5 Kw HDKAJ Spec D) takes a 71 Degree C (160 degree F) one. Anything higher will set off the high temp system I believe.
