- Q: A couple years ago the power in our area was out for two whole weeks because of ice and such, we stayed warm thanks to gas heating but now I'm in an all electric mobile home in the same area. All I want to power is the refrigerator, deep freeze, microwave, one laptop and at least one, maybe two little plug in heaters.I need to know what size/type generator to get and if I need a separate kit or anything in order to hook up to my mobile home. I don't want to buy the wrong type or size and find out it doesn't work in the middle of an ice storm again.Thank you for any and all help, it's very much appreciated.
- add up the watts of the things you want to be on during an outage and get a generator with a little bit bigger output. you don't want to overwork a generator that's too small. bigger is always better.

- There may be no difference. It will depend on the application. For example, if I specified an ATS that had the proper voltage and current capacities, the only other item of concern would be to determine if the transfer would be a make before break or a break before make type of transfer. In a make before break, it would mean the sources would be placed into parallel operating condition before one of the sources was interrupted. This would require the ability to synchronize the sources. Which means the frequency, voltage and phase relationship of the sources must match before they are placed into parallel service. On a break before make switch, usually only phase rotation and approximate voltage levels are of concern. Hope this helps, Newton1Law
- Q: I was offered a job in the same general posistion for a YOUNG company that has offered me 15.00 more a hour, lead position, training in a differnt brand of the same product I work on and, basicly the freedom to choose my own hours (avg. 40-55 hrs). Or do I stay where I am at were I have some stabability, lead position, unstable hours (avg. 40-65 hrs plus nights away from home/family), possabilities of advancment and, a since of loyalty to bosses. Note: I worked hard to get where I am at, however, my current knowledge is the bases for new job. WHAT DO I DO????????????

- Q: I am leaving a career as an aviation electrician after 23 years and have applied for a job as a diesel locomotive electrician with Union Pacific. I was notified about a skills test and was hoping to brush up a bit before the test. Which areas should I focus on studying? Also what can I expect on a day to day basis working in this field? And lastly, although I can troubleshoot and wire a jumbo liner in my sleep I don't have specific experience with large generators and motors. How will this affect me in the hiring process. Thanks in advance for any help.

- Q: Diesel trains use electric motors because the low-end torque is much greater than a mechanical drive drive train, I was wondering, since low-end torque is essential to starting with heavy dead weight, why more trucks and SUVs don't have electric motors on the wheels?
- For most part, it has to do with reliability. A train runs on a set track, so no ups and downs and bumps and whatnot. Nothing under the tracks that'll come up and snag the bottom, that sort of thing. A truck on the other hand, do drive over things, and the wheels go up and down bazillion times, and all that. A truck's wheel hubs are designed to be as simple and robust as possible for maximum reliability. Adding a motor to the hub would decrease its ground clearance, decrease reliability, and if one of the motors fail the vehicle can't really run on the rest (assuming all wheels are powered) as it produces asymmetrical thrust. So you have to disconnect the matching one on the other side. The designers basically judged that currently, the technology cannot compensate enough for the advantages to outweigh the disadvantages. A while back, Ford was considering a system called gas-operated launch assist. Basically, it operates similar to the way a hybrid stores electricity generated from braking, and releases it back for acceleration. However, instead of doing battery/motor/generator, it uses a compressible gas as the energy storage medium. While driving and braking, gas is compressed into the the cylinder. When the start starts moving again, the gas is allowed to expand, adding a bit of oomph to the launch. Apparently, that idea didn't go anywhere, but it was interesting. And Dodge actually built a special hybrid Durango that only had the gas engine drive one set of wheels, and electricity drive the other set of wheels. It is much easier and cheaper to make than a regular hybrid, but apparently the traction control is giving them problems to coordinate between the two drivetrain systems. --- Kasey C, PC guru since Apple II days Borg Burgers: Have it our way. - Q: I just got sworn in a few weeks ago to the navy, as an engineman. I was wanting to be on a carrier but didn't know if there was any jobs for the EN rate?
- Most likely work related to the diesel generator or as an auxiliaryman. All propulsion work on a carrier is done by the NUCS. edit Enginemen are often assigned as small craft engineers, operating the engines on various boats carried by the ship.
- Q: If global warming is as bad as Scientists say, two hours a month without power seems like a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things. I'm sure theres a way to keep hospitals running and emergency services running. All shops would have to lock down I guess people would start rioting or something, but I would think there would have to be some sort of way to covertly have different towns and counties shut down for a couple hours discretely each monthmaybe at night when people are sleeping? Just a thought.
- Of course it would depend on the power source. It is not the use of electricity that is causing problems to the global climate, but how it is generated.

- Hello There are different kinds of power generatorswhat purpose are you looking to fulfill? How big is your home or wherever you're trying to heat? I would recommend a diesel generator as opposed to a gasoline generator. They're more efficient, which also translates to being much cheaper to run. They make silent diesel generators (not 100% silent but decently quiet). If you wanted to do some welding with the generator, you could do that too. - i recently offered an HDTV and am very happy with it. the image and sound are astounding, offering you're fairly watching something broadcast in HDTV format. I put in a Band Of Brothers DVD and the infants concept a conflict replaced into fairly happening in the front room. while you're finding at a usually happening channel, the intense definition brings out greater of the grainy high quality of the sign. that's the only disadvantage I fairly have got here across so far. What i found as the thank you to shrink that's working greater advantageous than one cable to the inputs on the television. on the returned of your HDTV there will be an enter jack categorized HDMI. - Q: i found a 1998 dodge ram 2500 with turbo diesel Cummings motor, and people tell me that Cummings is the best to get why is that? would $3300 be worth it for this truck?
- well the Cummings engine is used in semi trucks but are compact to fit into trucks. the turbo is in all of the trucks so when you hit a certain speed it will kick in. my dad tried to race one in his work van but when the turbo kicked in the power was to much and the truck was all over the road. but these trucks have better gas mileage and last longer which increases its value.
