Q: how is the diesel power transmitted to the traction wheels in a diesel locomotive
In most Locomotives it is using a Generator driving Electric Motors. The post about the Western Regions Hydralics is correct. But the (Great) Western habits die hard. The Adelante high speed DMUs have a Voith Hydralic drive and the High Speed Train Power cars are getting MTU (Maybach) engines. Hydralic transmission is very common in muliple units as they are more efficient then electric transmission for the smaller engines (up to about 700hp). There is also Mechanical Transmission used in railcars, much like a car's gearbox, this is rare in the UK but more common in Europe
Q: I am wondering did water go over these reactors, and if they did is that what caused the problems, and if not, what in fact really happened?Could the devastation have been worse if water washed over it?
It probably helped with the overall catastrophe. It wasn't the tsunami, or the earthquake that caused the problems. It was during , and after the shut down procedure of the reactors, they had explosions and loss of power, backup generators, and eventually battery power that there having to deal with. Overheating big-time.
Q: I Live In Westchester NY, and ever since the Nuclear power plant in Japan went into meltdown I've been pretty worried about what would happen if Indian Point went into meltdown. Now Hurricane Irene is coming, Is it strong enough to cause a meltdown? Thanks in advance

Q: If i am using a permanent magnet dc motor as generator then how should i calculate how much electricity the motor will produce ? or lets say i want to produce 1kw power with permanent magnet dc motor then how much hp motor i shd choose
I'm not an expert on this, but I'll give it my best guess. To try to point you in the right direction. First, you need to know the torque of this magnet. 1 horse power 0.74569 kilowatts So to get a 1 kilowatts, you need 1.35962 horsepower. The motor will have a certain efficiency. I do not know if this is factored in to the motors power rating, however if the efficiency is, say, 90%. Then you will need to divide the horse power by 0.9 to get the correct horse power rating. Is this a motor part of a diesel / fuel generator, or is it part of a wind turbine / water turbine?
Q: If I have to put gasoline 8h/day on a 50 KW Generator, what would be the Cost per Kwh or the Annual Cost? Thanks!
50 Kilowatt Generator
Q: Diesel generator set how to put?
Should not be located in the vicinity of the wall outside the room, to create conditions for outdoor exhaust pipe and exhaust pipe
Q: I am doing this project to find eco friendly alternatives for businesses. So how is electricity in it generated. Also.why is the pollution of water bad? I mean i realize that it kills marine life, and it affects biodiversity, but how does it affect the wold, or even us humans???
Electricity would likely come from a generator, running on the same fuel which moves the ship. Diesel, bunker oil, or maybe coal. The bad of water pollution depends some on the kind of pollution. Mercury tends to concentrate as it moves up the food chain, until people who eat lots of fish become at risk for brain damage. Enough carbon dioxide in the water makes it more acid, which kills lots of things in the ocean and means less for people to eat. Lots of nitrogen (nitrates nitrites) may lead to overgrowth of plants, which then die and make a dead zone where not much of anything lives. Besides dead oceans not making any fish to eat, there is the possibility that a large part of the world will not be capturing carbon dioxide, which would increase global climate change (the greenhouse effect)
Q: Can any anyone help me with this. The generator is a brushless, air-cooled diesel generator without AVR. It is kinda old and it's made from Japan. The manufacturer is Yanmar.
There's a capacitor in the generator, and I suspect it's bad. They're not very expensive, and can be tested with the right kind of meter.
Q: I work at a high rise building as security and was interested to know why smoke would come out of a generator? What would be the main reason? Engine too hot? A snapped wire?
What kind of generator and how is it fueled? A diesel generator will smoke at start-up, and if it is an older unit burning old fuel, it will smoke in operation as well. That would be smoke from the exhaust. If you are writing about smoke from the windings - that is the generator itself - that would be due to an overload and/or winding failure, and caused by the system overheating. If you are writing about smoke coming off the engine - that could be from an oil leak, or debris falling onto the engine and being combusted by heat. Only the first of these is 'normal'.
Q: How would i get people to fund a bomb shelter. Of course i will guarantee them a spot for them and there closest 4 family members. I want to stock it and build. I also want to have at least enough food to live for 6 months for at least 25 people. I will also want a ton of water (not literately a ton). Also some sort of water purification system, ventilation, and a diesel generator.I only want to shovel out about 5 thousand of my own cash.Tell me about how many people i need, how to get them. Maybe some places to get supplies.Thank you (:
