Q:Explain the operation, advantages and disadvantages of diesel power plant?
I am not sure what you are really asking about the operation of a diesel generator. You start the engine and connect the electrical load to the generator buss. If you are connecting to a grid or existing power system then you need to match the frequency of the grid. As to advantages and disadvantages, you need to state what you want to compare it to and how large the generator or system is.
Q:I am buying a portable generator in order to power up to six, 500 watt halogen work lights to light up my horse arena at night. what are some things I should consider in terms of features that are needed in this application. Also, I don't want alot of bells and whistles, I need to keep as low cost as possible but still safe and quiet.
You will need a minimum 3000 watt generator, but to prevent running it at 100% load go for something slightly larger, likely 4000 watts. Most generators in this size will supply 120V/240V instead of a single 120V output. The lights will have to be broken into two separate chains to feed from separate 120V outputs from the generator.
Q:i.e a house or a hospital.
Diesel or propane are good for long term use on small scale. You want a generator that runs at a low RPM to give a reasonable longevity between rebuilds. A diesel engine with a large storage fuel tank would be the best for small scale power generation. If you have a pipeline source for natural gas you can run a diesel engine on natural gas or propane. What makes a diesel the best choice is that it runs at about 1200 RPM and will run possibly for years without a snag other than oil and filter changes. A gasoline engine runs closer to 4000 or more RPM which causes far more wear and friction and isn't good for long term use. Gasoline is far cheaper and good for temporary generation like for normal power outages. Natural gas or propane generators, especially ran in a diesel style engine, burn very clean and can be cheaper if you have natural gas pipelines in your area, plus you wouldn't need a storage tank for fuel. Even a 10 KW generator could go through 20 gallons of diesel a day, so you would need at least a 500 gallon tank to last a month. Pipe line would eliminate this tank and truck delivery of fuels. If you are looking at off grid power, like solar or wind, it is best to combine the two. Solar heating is the cheapest way of heating water which could be used to heat a house and/or bath water. Wind is the cheapest for DC generation of electric which is stored in big banks of lead-acid batteries. Using LCD lights and low power equipment will minimize the amount of electricity you need to generate and store
Q:I want to buy a portable generator for power-outages and need some advice on which to buy. I want to run: at least one refrigerator possibly a stand-alone freezerbasic lightinga few outlets a sum-pump. I also need to provide power to my heat in the winter Our heat is natural gas but it needs to be lit with the pilot light and I guess the thermostats need power. Preferrably diesel so we can store fuel safer. How many volts and watts do I need, what price range should I look for, and how many gallons of fuel would I need to be prepared for a good 2 days without power? Thanks- best answer gets the 10!
You need at least a 5KW, I''d start at a 7 KW. You need to read the specs to see how much fuel it consumes, most give a rating such as 9 runtime hours at 1/2 capacity. You would not need to run it all the time either, like maybe 1 hour on, 2 off, and off overnight. You would get a transfer panel installed, for youe sump-pump, furnace, appliances, and convenience circuits you require. Since you have NG, you can look into an NG powered generator.
Q:HelloI am doing a question on my homework and im being asked to determine how long a tank of gas on a diesel generator would last a family if one tank produced 20kW of electricity. This family uses 2.052kWh of electricity every day. The problem i have run into is that i don't know how to determine how long tha tank can last with only those values, i have a feeling im missing something very obvious here. Any help would be great. Thanks!
20/2.052 # of days. about 9 1/2.
Q:I'm a salesman for a welding supplies company, and a customer is interested in buying a diesel welder/generator for use in the paddock where he can't get electricity. While looking around I've come across a 200amp machine but it says it's a 200amp AC welder. it was my understanding that all welders are DC standard, and the AC current was only on welders to weld aluminum.
NO, you are wrong. Most simple common use welder runs on low voltage high current AC to weld steel, except plasma welder that requires very high voltage DC. Of course, portable welder runs on battery power high current DC where AC power source is not available.
Q:i could only find a weight on one website and it said around 8,000 lbs. This one is rusted out and were planning on taking it in for scrap normally we would cut it up and take it in but this thing is a monster im thinking about renting a flatbed if it is 8,000 it would be worth it. The cooling coil and somekind of box with all the controls has been removed but they probobly werent any more then 500 lbs
That weight should be very close minus loss to rust. I would call a scrapyard first to get an idea of what they are paying, especially because part of it is a diesel engine and there are guidelines with some yards how they will accept machinery, such as clear of any fluids. The copper or aluminum wires and generator cores will probably be most valuable parts and might be worth removing and forgetting the rest depending on what the scrap yard says about the engine and rusted steel shell is worth. It will be a hard move, even for a flatbed truck because the little winch will have to pull that generator which is super heavy and dead weight. Final thing to look into is whether there is any value in any part of it. This is a very popular size generator and is still produced today except with Cummins diesel engine, maybe someone has an older one with same engine and their block is cracked!?
Q:Any help regarding my question would be greatly appreciated.I have a 1991 Prevost Marathon Mirage LE Luxury Motorcoach and I am wanting to remove the Engine (Detroit 8v92) is this a job to hard for a reasonably experienced Diesel mechanic to conquer? I have all the space in the world in my game room to do this. Just wanting to know if the engine is on a slide track and it slides out (I have seen other coaches do this) or do i have to totally unmount the engine to get it out to where I can work on it? I know this is a stupid question and I don't know exactly how to word it. But any help regarding my question again would be greatly appreciated.any diesel mechanics out there? Is there a video posted somewhere on the web that may show a backyard mechanic doing this so it may enlighten me. lol
Sir, Engine Dismantling Very Responsible Job Once Removed The Parts You Should Reassemble That Is - The Problem.Total Repairs Anybody Will Do But Once Removed By You Nobody Give Attention Keep in Mind. Firstly Remove The Battery Store It Safe Location.Disconnect The ,Diesel lines,Wirings,Cables,- Sesors, Modules, Then Disconnect,Gear BellHousing,Torque Coverter If There,Engine Mountigs, All Water Lines,A/c Connections,Front Grill,If You Need The Bonnet Also, Put The Rope Put Cross Bar- Tie Properly Care The Mudguards,Pull The Engine With Sufficiant Manpower Or Crane Nor Lifter. Check Once More before Takeout The Engine Assy-Wheel Blocks,Support To The Gear Box,Door Lock, Safe The Key,Nobody Not Allowed Inside The Car, Before Pullout Check Again And Make Sure Nomore- COnnections Arrange The Table Keep Everythings Ready Pullout Keep On The Table Check Externals. Make More Dismantling The Engie Take To Machine Shop They Knows What Nee for Your Engine. If Over machine Work Bring To Spot Selct New Parts What You Need Do Accordingly.
Q:i read alot, maybe them all, but i cant understand how yachts work or get their power from. Please help !!
Most non-sailboat yachts longer than 40 feet (and up to 300 feet or more) are diesel powered using one or several large Caterpillar, Man, John Deere, Detroit or other similar large diesel engines. A yacht shorter than 40 feet is often gasoline powered. None are battery powered. All large yachts have diesel generators which are used to generate electric power for the onboard electrical systems. When a yacht is docked it usually obtains power from the shore using a large cable that connects to shore power supply systems. Yachts with sails usually also have a single small diesel engine that allows them to maneuver in harbors and other places where sailing might be dangerous or impossible.
Q:Ignore the extra construction costs from having to build everything at once. Just assume the average cost now. What I am focused on is you are no longer allowed to have diesel generator backups at the plants. You ca use whatever storage technology is currently available, but you now have to provide 24/7 power.
It will depend on how the bureaucrats handle it. Solar energy is the most abundant energy resource on earth – 173,000 terawatts of solar energy strikes the Earth continuously. That's more than 10,000 times the world's total energy use. Building a system that harnesses and controls all of that energy is a HUGE investment. Adding wind power and geothermal energy production systems is another HUGE investment. Leaving ALL original investment costs out of the equation would only leave maintenance costs. I doubt that the environmentalists would want anything less than a socialistic approach in dolling out all of that energy to individual families and businesses who are environmentally friendly. Capitalism would no longer exist. BIG GOVERNMENT would be controlling 100% of the energy through the environmental Nazis. Energy would be very cheap to ALL conformists. Environmental Nazis would control the policing of energy use. Food and clothing manufacturing will also be controlled by the Environmental Nazis. Everyone will work for $15 per hour (even the President of the New World Order - aka United Nations) Environmental Utopia! Game over! (tic) Everyone's monthly budget will be controlled by Environmental Nazis. $50 per month per working person and $0 for all non-working persons. Never to change again. If 50% of the World's population is working, then The WORLD GOVERNMENT will take in $180 billion per month or $2.6 trillion per year to maintain the Global Energy Grid. If we throw in the other 25% of the World's part time workers (1.8 billion), and throw in $25 each per month, then The WORLD GOVERNMENT could add an additional $540 billion to their monopoly on energy supply. That's a total of $3.14 trillion yearly. (Hope that's enough.) Perfect weather and a perfect society. I'm already signing up. Where do I sign? Does that mean marijuana is free also? Health care? Transportation? Who's gonna build it and who will be in-charge of it? I'll help for free.
