Q:If diesel engine generator stopped for long time, what the maintenance it needs?
First make sure the fuel is fresh periodically. Old fuel deteriorates makes it hard it start and run. Second check the oil see if it is clean, check the oil filter too. Third check the fuel filter, change once a year if not used because of bad / old fuel. Forth Check the out put of the engine / voltage / oil pressure / amperage / operating temperature / current fuses / transfer switches are working properly. Listen and make sure the engine is running smooth, no misses. Should be good to go then.

Q:An electrical generator without an engine?
There was much more success searching with terms like belt driven generator, generator head, or two bearing generator, than with just generator. A practical problem: An AC generator's output frequency is dependent on the shaft speed, so you'll need a governor to keep the speed constant, even as the applied load changes. The packaged engine-generator sets include a governor set-up, does the engine you have include a governor? Many of these generator heads run at 3600rpm, is your diesel going to be happy running for long periods of time at that speed? You could change the shaft speed with a pulley ratio if you use belts, but in any event, the shaft speed must be kept constant at the manufacturers specification to keep the output line frequency and voltage at the desired spec. You will also need a Generator Transfer Switch to transfer household loads from the utility to the generator, if you decide to go that far. In the third reference provided below, notice that some of the pictures show only a lay-out. Some sort of very sturdy mounting plate would be needed for those configurations. If the engine was started with the generator head just laying there, parts would be flying all over the place in short order. Obviously shaft and belt alignments would be critical.

Diesel engines are very similar to gasoline engines. If you have the technical knowledge to work on gasoline engines then the same principles applies to diesel engines as well. I know this is true because I took the course for auto/diesel automotive technician certification. I rebuilt them both along with carburetors, transmissions, starters, alternators, and generators. The only difference I can recall are that the diesel engines required more or less air than the gasoline engines. Of course diesel fuels burns much slower than gasoline. Therefore diesel engines might have additional mechanisms to produce or reduce the quantity of air. That is all.

Almost all diesel's are a electric hybrid. They were first developed in the 1920's. The diesel motor drives a generator which drives the electric motors in the locos axles. This of course was done because the is NO transmission available that can handle the amount of power these engines can make. Generally (depending on the loco) they'll burn anywhere from .5 gpm for the smaller locos to 10 gallons per mile for a large 6600hp loco fully loaded.
Q:can I add more starting wattage to a small power generator by adding more starting capacitors ?
The old style, pre- electronic wash machines used that same principle. They had a relatively small motor and used one or two huge capacitor's to get the motor going. Those capacitor's save up the maximum amplitude on the voltage sine wave (120V) and bleed out the power when the amplitude reverses each 1/60 th of a second. You might luck out, but I'm not sure if the AC compressor motor is an induction motor like the wash machine motors are so check out how to wire the capacitor in the circuit first and if it works with a compressor motor. It should, come to think of it, a lot of compressor's have capacitor starts s I can't see why a refrigerator compressor would be much different. You did say the running wattage of the generator is enough to keep the fridge going.right?
