- Q: I'm doing research on trains and Google isn't helping, it's giving me everything but what I need so maybe I'm not posing/wording the question properly or something but a friend told me about this so hopefully I can find the answer.
- I believe it is 6 gallons per mile. I can tell you that a tractor trailer gets 4-8 miles per gallon of diesel.
- Q: I am setting up a bio gas plant on my farm in india. I want to know if generators are available for bio gas. What are the modifications required to petrol and diesel engines to make them run on bio gas.
- I think that there are a number of firms in India which manufacture Bio Gas Generators so that you may be able to buy them directly instead of modifying your Diesel Generator into Bio-Gas Mode of functioning. All the very best.
- Q: HI FROM NEW ZEALAND.I HAVE A LISTER-PETTER 16 KVA DIESEL 3 PHASE GENSET WITH SINGLE PHASE SOCKET @ 240 VAC. WITH A ITALIAN ELECTRONIC DIAGNOSTICS CONTROL PANEL WITH BREAKERS ETC.WHEN RUNNING A ESAB CADDY PROFESSIONAL 140 INVERTER WELDER @130 AMPS USING 4 MM HARDFACING RODS, ON FIRST STRIKE THE GENSET CUTS OUT AND DIE.WHEN USING A COPPER WOUND TRANFORMER WELDER THE THING RUNS WELL BUT WILL NOT STOP WHEN I HIT THE KEY TO TURN OFF OR EMERGENCY STOP BUTTON.NOTE; THIS IS A STANDBY GENSET IN THAT I JUST PLUGGED IN A WELDER, THE GENSET IS NOT A DEDICATED WELDING GENERATOR.I USED OTHER DIESEL GENSETS PRIOR WITHOUT ANY PROBS.WILL ANY1 HAVE ANY CLUES? REGARDING THIS.THANKS IN ADVANCE.CHEERS CARL GIN
- Does the Esab welder have high frequency? If so the high freq. is feeding back into the generator and frying the electronics. You may need to have the generators repaired. The only way to prevent damage is to turn the high freq. off, or drive an earth ground as close to the welder as possible and you have to run a wire to your grounding clamp to this ground and the machine ground needs to go to this also. You have to get the high freq. out of the circuit as quick as possible. (I have a Hobart Champion Fabshop that is notorious for this.)
- Q: I have 6,500 gas generator to run two 12,500btu roof a/c units on my bus.Nothing but problem after problem with generator.I was advised to change unit out to diesel unit! Any advise on what size i should be looking for?
- You don't say what the generator problems are. It may be undersized for the AC units you are trying to run plus other things you are trying to run. The AC unit may require all of the generator's capacity for about 2 seconds to start. So if one AC is running, there may not be enough capacity to start the second AC unit. What other things are you running off the generator at the same time? The 6,500 watt generator can only supply a maximum of 27 amps out of the 240 volt outlet or 15 amps out of each of the 120 volt outlets or any combination that does not exceed the 6,500 watt capacity of the generator. A diesel engine has nothing to do with the capacity of the generator. Diesel engines are used on larger capacity generators or continuous duty generator sets. The generator itself doesn't care what type of engine is spinning the rotor. Will the generator run just one of the units? If it does, then my thoughts are the generator doesn't have the capacity to run the loads you have.
- Q: Hello,I'm doing a research project that requires me to report on five ethical missteps made by engineers/staff at the Fukushima plant that caused the disaster. I'm having trouble with this research because most of the information i'm finding centers around the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that caused so much damage. Can anyone point me toward any human errors that centered around poor ethical judgement?
- If you just google human error fukushima you're going to get (a) a few articles from the summer of 2011; (b) a rash of articles from July, 2012; (c) a rash of articles from Oct-Nov, 2013; and (d) a rash of articles from last week (Feb 2014). Whether all will cite ethical missteps is unknown to me.
- Q: If global warming is as bad as Scientists say, two hours a month without power seems like a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things. I'm sure theres a way to keep hospitals running and emergency services running. All shops would have to lock down I guess people would start rioting or something, but I would think there would have to be some sort of way to covertly have different towns and counties shut down for a couple hours discretely each monthmaybe at night when people are sleeping? Just a thought.
- A nice thought but not practical, power can't be saved for later and if it was the world is a 24/7 operation, with never a good time to shut it down. Acid rain was going to destroy us at one time, now nobody mentions it
- Q: I recently seperated the generator from the engine and replaced the rear main oil seal on the engine the electric generator was only moved back about 16-18 inches to access rear main seal. job went well with no problems after completeing job I turned down rpms to about 1000 rpm It was put back in service They use it to power up refer containers from the harbor. the next day I check it and they had turned up rpms to ??? as fast as it would run and 12 refer units running off it oh it's 480 volt well it ran for a week non stop and broke down and of corse it was my fault all i did was unbolt drive plate on front of rotor from flywheel of engine .est to repair is 6,000 could this be my fault after it ran for a week or caused from hi rpms and heat related possibley
- If they need a scapegoat, you're it. However if it ran for 168 hours on a diesel engine and things were not RE-torqued/double checked
- Q: I have a Diesel generator using leroy sommers alternator and which uses intelilite MRS 11 controller , it is 380 V , 50 Hz , yesterday i started having problems , after running the genset for like 12 seconds it shuts down and i get two error msgs the first one is : Shutdown Level for Phase 1 under volts the second error msg is : Shutdown Level for Gen voltage Unbalance .in the first 12 seconds the voltage on 3 phases got no problem and after 12 seconds the generator auto shuts down and i cannot seem the find the problem , any help will be appreciated
- Depends on the local rules. Power companies don't care, since once he is cut off he will not be back feeding the line. We've had a few people around here do it, including several who were far enough from the powerlines that it would have been prohibitively expense to hook them up. I just want to add that if you live in a cold climate and set yourself up to utilize the waste heat from the generator, the cost of fuel and generator may be cheaper than paying for electricity and heat together, even assuming you have to buy a replacement generator every year. If you add in appropriate alternate energy, while using the bottom line as your decision driver, you may cut your costs over conventional sources. Depends on how you do it.
- Q: Hi and thanks for reading.I have a small trailer I am looking for a back up propane generator for.We have wind storms here that knock out power for days on end, about a half dozen times per year, so I'm looking to get some back up electricity, howeverMy lot size is SMALL, so is my trailer. I have a natural gas line, and gas furnace, so I only use about 1500 watts at peak times, so I figure a 3k watt generator will more than cover my needs.SOUND is a huge factor. I have the worst neighbors in the world and I really need something quiet. I'm looking for something with less than 60 ddb.I have seen a lot of propane generators that look good, but I dont know if they can be used with natural gas easily. I think so, but would love to hear if thats true, and they dont have the standby plug feature, which I need to save my fish tank, any know if this can be easily changed by a skilled electrician?Thank you. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
- I've seen ones running propane, gas and diesel. The larger units for the power you want normally come in their own enclosure helping to keep noise under control. I've not see one designed for natural gas. No propane ones are not designed for natural gas. The engines have to be designed to handle it so you would need to converse with a place selling these to find out if such are available. If not contact the mfrs for information as to this conversion idea. The enhance quiet you can also build an enclosure around the generator which would limit sound travel from the unit.
- Q: For a new observatory in the Andes at 17,000 feet, we need to provide power continuously for 4 months. Requirement is 208VAC, 3 phase, 10 kW. The site is accessible by large truck, but connecting to the power grid is out of the question. We are thinking diesel generators and large fuel tanks. Any suggestions out there? Thanks.
- Are there any issues with the high altitude? You may need to modify the generators to work that high. 17,000 feet is really up there! Have you considered fuel cells? Wind power may also be an innovative solution.
