Q:What is the difference in construction and operation of ATS that switches between electrical source?
There may be no difference. It will depend on the application. For example, if I specified an ATS that had the proper voltage and current capacities, the only other item of concern would be to determine if the transfer would be a make before break or a break before make type of transfer. In a make before break, it would mean the sources would be placed into parallel operating condition before one of the sources was interrupted. This would require the ability to synchronize the sources. Which means the frequency, voltage and phase relationship of the sources must match before they are placed into parallel service. On a break before make switch, usually only phase rotation and approximate voltage levels are of concern. Hope this helps, Newton1Law
Q:Why don't hybrid car makers just run the gas engine to power a generator at constant speed? More efficient.
Currently Volvo is experimenting with this idea, using the additional caveat that the car use rim motors to ditch the heavy and complicated transmissions. The problem is that you are limited by your motor as to power. Generally an hybrid is a large electric motor(say 50 hp) and a small gasoline engine(also about 50 hp(ease of calculations)). When you want to accelerate faster than 50 hp can provide, both engine and motor work to drive the wheels(combined 100 hp). The motor then can be used as a generator, as mentioned by other answers. There is limited space in a car, and you would then need a more expensive, larger, heavier (100 hp) electric motor if it cannot pair with the gasoline engine. This means more weight for the car, though some would be conserved due to simpler transmission design. As you probably know more weight in the vehicle means less efficiency, all things equal. I am thinking of trying a similar design to what you mention with a motorcycle due to it's smaller power requirements.
Q:How many amps does it take to run a freight train?
That all depends upon a number of things. First is the type of traction motor that is driving the wheels. Next is the weight of the entire load to be moved by the traction motors. Also is the grade the load is being moved upon. When a locomotive gets up to speed it might not be using many amps by the traction motors to maintain the speed. However, to start from a dead stop on flat track with a very heavy load it could run as high as 200 or more amps. Again, it also would depend upon the number of engines driving the number of generators driving the number of traction motors. A single locomotive might need to use more amps to get up to speed than a combination of locomotives hauling the same load. There are many variables to this question. Given a particular locomotive, types of traction motors, the load weight, it would be easier to calculate what would be needed in amperage. Everything depends upon all of these things. An engineer can burn up a traction motor(s) by exceeding the amount of amps maximum that the motor can handle. The generators don't care, nor do they figure into the problem. The diesels don't care either. They will just turn the generators faster with more RPM's, and the faster they run, the more the generators will produce, but will the traction motors handle what is given them?? It just depends .

It is not good to run a Diesel generator throughout the year without stopping. It requires regular stopping for maintenance, at least once a week for cleaning or replacement of oil filters and replacement of parts.THE SHUTDOWN MAY LAST 8 OR !6 HOURS DEPENDING ON THE PARTS TO BE REPLACED.

Q:If i am using a permanent magnet dc motor as generator then?
I'm not an expert on this, but I'll give it my best guess. To try to point you in the right direction. First, you need to know the torque of this magnet. 1 horse power 0.74569 kilowatts So to get a 1 kilowatts, you need 1.35962 horsepower. The motor will have a certain efficiency. I do not know if this is factored in to the motors power rating, however if the efficiency is, say, 90%. Then you will need to divide the horse power by 0.9 to get the correct horse power rating. Is this a motor part of a diesel / fuel generator, or is it part of a wind turbine / water turbine?
