I noticed how all the commuter trains here in Massachusetts use diesel engines. Will they switch to overhead lines in the not so distant future?
Derail Dieterzakas have the most VALID point (as opposed to green-dreams): 1) Electrical trains require power plants, and MOST people don't want a power plant built near by. 2) The VAST expense of electrification. Cal Train (an 80 mile commuter route in the San Francisco-San Jose) has been discussing electrification for a decade now at a cost of roughly $700 million (2001 dollars). Using THAT figure, this would work out to a cost of $10 million a mile. The BIG problem in California is power !! We've been under-powered in this state for almost two decades, and YET the environmentalists fight tooth and nail against ANY new power source !! They oppose coal of course (even though the 1 MWatt plant my brother supervises puts out less pollutants than a dozen cars) they oppose nuclear power, they oppose hydro-electric because it requires dams that flood a valley HECK, they even oppose the wind-generators because they might hit a bird !! WE NEED more nuclear plants, we need smarter grids, and we need other green sources. BUT electrification isn't the magic solution diesel locomotives are efficient and effective.
i have 350kw old diesel generator and want to calculate the exact consumtionption at various loads.

done
google them and then find out there requirements - very simple .
because generating electricity is not very efficient, coal being imported from bolivia etcDoes it matter how far the stations are apart?btw dieselectric means the locomotive isn't directly diesel-driven, but runs on electricity generated by a diesel-generator inside the locomotive
The advantages of dieselelectric outweigh steam, mostly due to the high maintenance required on coal-fired steam engines. Another large factor is the ability of electrical generator to drive the traction motors required to overcome the inertia of the enormous mass of the freight when the train is starting up. Efficiency is not simply the mechanical efficiency of the system, but the ability to maintain the system and adapt it to various tasks.
gas is too expensive. here in florida i guess everyone has a noisy gas powered generator for when hurricanes knock out our power

Hello friends.I had to make a list of equipment for a civil construction company. Among the equipment were generator and diesel engine. For generator, i am very clear that it is used for alternate power generation in case of electricity un availability. What is the purpose of diesel engine? Where is is used? Guide me please.
Just about every piece of equipment powered by an internal combustion engine found at a civil construction site is powered by a diesel engine. Things such as scrapers, loaders, track hoes, dozers, dump trucks, rollers, and even electric generators are powered with diesel engines.
I have to wonder. WHY don't we have a car right now in 2010 that gets 100+ mpg?Ok we have the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius that get 50MPG+ WELL why not DOUBLE or TRIPLE or QUADRUPLE the Batteries and get 100MPG??? Seriously WHY NOT PACK Enough Lithium Ion batteries in there to get 300MPG?? You mean to tell me that with all the technology we have today in 2010 that we can't come up with a Hybrid that gets 100MPG??? PURE NonsenseSomeone somewhere is keeping the 100MPG car from being produced. Simple as that. You mean to tell me that you can't pack enough Lithium Ion batteries into a CAR to get 100MPG??? Yea right. You know it could be done. BIG OIL and other political forces DON'T WANT the 100MPG car. Why did gas prices go to $4.50 per gallon??? TO get the $$$ While the Getting was good. Now the gig is up and they know it.
Ok we have the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius that get 50MPG+ WELL why not DOUBLE or TRIPLE or QUADRUPLE the Batteries and get 100MPG?? Because the batteries aren't what gives the Prius it's high mpg. The Prius gets its high mpg because the engine is sized for steady state driving rather than acceleration. This allows the engine to run in the most efficient rpm range most of the time. The electrical components are there to provide the additional power needed for acceleration and to allow electric running for short periods during very low power demand when the engine would run outside of the efficient band. People have put in additional batteries in the Prius and mostly they received less mpg. Note that Plug-in cars don't improve mpg, they just transfer the cost of gas to the cost of electricity. This may or may not improve overall economy depending upon driving conditions, trip length, and electric rates. In 2011 there will be a smaller version of the Prius. This should be capable of 100 mpg as I've been able to get 70 mpg over a fill (about 600 miles) in the 2004 Prius on occasion, though between 60 and 69 is more common. FWIW, the Prius was developed in four years (1992 to 1996 when the 1997 model started shipping)
Frequency meter
The frequency meter is used for measuring the frequency of an alternator or other equipments like variable frequency drives. It should be connected between two lines of a unit. Check for its voltage rating. The meter should be rated the same as the voltage rating of the line being measured. It could be used also for vhf and uhf frequency, digital or analog. So depending on your application, you have to specify its frequency range and voltage rating.
