Q: It eventually accumulates to the point that the drain gets backed up, draino doesn't really help. We have to take the whole stopper part out and pull out the gunk. It doesn't happen in my other sinks.: A rather unpleasant answer, but here goes. What goes down your bathroom sink drain is known as "Grey Water". It consists of water (naturally), hair, soap, shampoo, dead skin, shavings and other nasty things. Your bathroom sink drain is most probably slower to empty than your actual bath, hence the "gunk" is not flushed away. To alleviate the problem, obtain caustic soda crystals, take out your plug, pour as much crystals as you can into the drain, leave overnight if possible, the water in the u-bend will be enough to start the crystals working. Rinse through with hot water in the morning, job done. NB, treat caustic soda crystals as toxic and strong alkaline, take precautions as regards eyes, hands etc, and ensure all the soda has gone before using the sink. You may have to do this more than once, but it does work.
