- We don't know when the carpet was initially installed. Was it 5 years old before you got there? Unfortunately, there is usually a process when you first sign your lease that you do a walk-through of the premises to determine if there were stains on the carpet before you lived there, damage to appliances, holes in the walls etc. It sounds like you didn't know you were supposed to do that, or weren't told. You could ask that the landlord allow you to try to have the carpet cleaned before they charge you to replace it...it shouldn't really be your responsibility to replace carpet unless you seriously did some damage to the majority of it. If they refuse, then tell them you will see them in small claims court. Just make sure you send a certified letter requesting that you are allowed to pay for the cleaning before they replace it. If you do go to court you will need proof that you sent them the letter. On the other hand, if you had dogs in your apartment, or something like that, and they determined that the carpet was torn up or ruined, you may not have much recourse. You should look at your lease and see what it says. That will help you determine whether or not you actually signed a document making you liable for those kinds of costs. good luck.

- Depends on what you are the glue, and if it is a common oil stains, scrub with water, if it is grease stains, use gasoline and other solvents to wash, but certainly will be washed after bleaching. If the area is not so, recommend the use of wallpaper knife above the layer of pollution to scrape, be careful next time

- Q: My carpet has a mystery stain. It's very sticky and black and ground in. I have tried goo gown and soap and water. I need some sort of heavy duty carpet cleaning suggestions.
- Hello, Adding soap to the sticky and black ground in mystery stain is just making it worse. You are adding a surfactant (Soap) that gets sticky when it dries. You need to find out if the stain is a oil ( like food dropped ) or sugars like soda pop. First thing you want to do is get rid of the soap residue. If you have a wet dry vac. Get club soda and pour it onto the stick black ground in mystery stain. Use a soft shoe brush and start brushing the stain. If it is turning foamy you have to get DEFOAMER. Spray it on the carpet till you do not get any foam on your brush. (It cuts soap bonds so you can get the soap residue off the carpet). Keep adding club soda. Extract the club soda from the carpet. The black and sticky should start to go away. You should be left with just the original stain, or it should be gone. If you have no foamy residue and it still is sticky you need a solvent because it is an oil based spot. I don't know where you live but if you look in your local yellow pages for Carpet Cleaning Supply stores you can get Defoamer and Solvents to clean the carpets. BE CAREFUL WITH THE SOLVENTS USE AS LITTLE OF THE SOLVENT AS POSSIBLE. IT CAN DELAMINATE THE CARPET IF YOU USE TOO MUCH. (seprate the carpet backing from the fiber) Solvents will desolve glue. Robert
