- Q:I have two area rugs that need cleaned. They aren't stained, just a bit dingy looking from my lab laying on them. One is a jute type rug, 8x10, and the other is a mixed type blend 7x9, it does have some wool in it. I was just wondering if I could use my hand held steamer, I have a Shark Steamer, to clean these? Will it hurt them?If I do this, what should I use with it, just water or some kind of carpet cleaner, etc?
- I have an iron that has that feature for vertical steaming, and it works very well. It delivers a lot of steam (using the powerful blast of steam button). I was surprised at how effective it is, as long as you don't place the soleplate too close to the fabric, particularly if there is synthetic fibre in the material. I also had one of the larger steamers, but I think the iron with the steamer feature works better than the other one. The brand is by T-fal, and the link below shows it (mine was on sale, much lower than the price shown):

- Use Genesis 950 Concentrate. It is designed to actually break down stains. It works great. I had paint stains on my carpet for months. Nothing got it out, it only smeared the paint and made it worse. A friend told me to try the 950 and it got everything out. I was in shock. I would imagine if it can take up wall paint like it was nothing, then it would do the same for a nail polish. I might try it tonight just to see - that's how much confidence i have in my answer!!! It has cleaned up cat puke for me. Completely taken out cat urine from carpet. The stuff is amazing. It does everything. I spilled shattered an entire bottle of A1 Steak Sauce on my carpet. The 950 got it ALL. Try the pint size, but seriously, once you use this, you will never want any other cleaners. I even put it in the rug doctor when I clean my carpets.
- Q:I have a brand new rug that is less than a week old. Every time I lift it up and sweep I have piles of white fine powder. That,s at least 3 times a day. Does anyone know what this is. I 'm thinking of taking it back.
- The powder is probably dried soap from all the shampooing. If you use 'extra' detergent in an effort to get it 'extra' clean, you leave a lot of residue in the carpet. You said you'd shampooed 'several' times, so that certainly leads me to think you've got residue build up. To check -- take a scrub brush. Dampen a section of carpet with a spray bottle and scrub it for a minute. Do you get suds out of the rug? Definitely soap residue. If you used an extraction shampooer (really uses a lot of suction to pull soap and water out) with NO MORE SOAP, you should be able to get a great deal of the leftover residue out of the fibers. In the future, reduce the amount of detergent, and spend extra time using the vacuum attachment to pull more liquid from the rug.
