Q:I have a 2003 cavalier and the front wheels are making a clunking noise at low speeds and a loud grinding noise at high speeds. I had the tires rotate to see if it was something with the tires them selves, but the noise is still in the front. Are the bearings actually part of the wheels, and if it was the bearings I should hear the noise in the back now? Or are they part of the axle?

These have crappy wheel bearings . They are part of spindle , they have 3 bolts that hold them on . If you take the brake caliper and rotor off the wheel bearing and hub assembly is right there . You need to take the axle nut off its a 30 , 32 or 36 mm cant remember . There is a hole in the hub that will let you access the 3 bolts . Takes about 20 min to change per side . Q:I took my Expedition to the dealer to check he alignment..... they told me they could not do that because the wheel bearings (all four) needed to be replaced. I took it to two other mechanics.... they said maybe only two needed to be replaced. I didn't ask these other mechanics about the alignment.

The wheel bearings need to be replaced, and then your car will need an alignment. My wheel bearings caused my alignment to be off, and caused excessive wear on my tires and my steering wheel starting to shake. If you're noticing excessive wear or bald patches on your tires, RUN to the dealership to get your wheel bearings repaired. It will cost you so much more to not get it done, and you won't feel safe until it's done.

Q:should i put a little grease inside the wheel so the bearings slide in easier? they really dont want to go in strait. should i lay the bearing in the hole and put the nut on and tighten the bearing into the wheel? Help....

Do not put grease, grease will wreak your bearings. The best thing to do is buy a skate tool that can help you insert them. If you dont want to do that simply put the bearing on the wheel (where it needs to go) and put the wheel on the truck with the bearing still on the wheel facing the truck. Then just simply push down on the wheel and the bearing will pop into place.

Q:i was putting a new tire on my gt dyno when it got really hard to pedal i ve smashed them before but it was my Friends bike! and was wondering if i should get the newest bearings?

Q:I refer to the overhung impeller pump. They normally have two bearings supporting the shaft, (and an oil box between the bearings). Why is that? why not only one bearing? what would happen if they are manufactured with one bearing only?

This is a rough guess by an electrician. There is a lot of radial pressure on the shaft of a rotary pump. Were pumps to have only one bearing, the bearing would have a lot more pressure on one side of the race than on the other. This would cause the bearing to fail. With two bearings, set some inches apart, the radial pressure on the races would be small.

Q:I have a 2004 VUE, and the last couple weeks I've been hearing a roaring noise coming from the rear right wheel. It has gotten louder the last day or so. One person told me it might be the bearings, and that it's a easy thing to have fixed. I'm taking it to the mechanic on Friday. Anyone have an idea how much this might cost?

Now here is what you do if you get a shop to do it. Get estimates from everyone. Then go by brake check and get an estimate. Now the trick is is to get on the computer for the brake check in your city, if you have one. They have a calendar there where you can schedule your vehicle for putting in new bearings. If you will notice, on certain days, they have up to 30% on some locations at different times and days. You might call and ask what the percent off covers. Is it parts or labor or both. But seems a good deal. Otherwise, buy a hayes repair manual for about $20 or so. Bearings are one of the few things that are EASY to put in. Now you can go to one of those back yard mechanics who can do it real cheap.

Ball bearings?? There are no ball bearings in the front end of a Ford Explorer, or any other car for that matter. Most cars use tapered roller(drum)bearings. They usually run 10-25$ per side, plus 5-15$ for new seals to put around them. Grease will be about 10$ for a can of good stuff. Do it yourself and save some money on the labor.

Q:I have a Myrtle Longboard with Sector 9 wheels...right now my wheels spin for about 30 sec...how long would it spin approximately with bones reds?

Free spin doesn't mean anything. You don't need new bearings unless yours are broken or rusted/seized. They won't make any difference. My Bones Reds spin for about 5 seconds.

Q:i wasn't to sure how to tell. i didn't think that it mattered but i guess it does. i figured that out when i bought bearings and wheels and they didn't fit inside the wheels. can you please tell me how to tell what kind of bearings i need in this type of situation?
