- Q: I went and had my local bike shop put a new freewheel on my bike today. While he had the wheel off he wiggled the rear axle, told me it was loose, and offered to adjust the bearings. Now my back axle makes a pinging noise while I'm riding. The noise is gone when the bike is on the stand with no weight on the axle. Can this be fixed and how much will it cost?
- The tech really should have looked further. My guess is that the reason your axle was loose is because either your axle is bent, the bearings are toast or your hub is shot. Unfortunately, these things often go hand in hand. Here's the progression in a worst case scenario... 1) The bike is ridden in a manner that causes the axle to bend; 2) With the axle bent, the bearing cones are compressing some of the bearings and crack one or 2 of them; 3) The pieces of the cracked bearings get jammed between the good bearings and also crack those, plus they jam themselves into the races of the hub destroying the bearing surfaces. Yuck.

- The 96' has regular taper bearings but it matters when getting the bearing you have to specify if your Ranger has the Dana35 or the Dana28 axle. NOTE: The 00' Ranger does have the Hub assembly style bearings.

- bones makes many types of bearings. Some are ABEC rated and the better ones are not. The ABEC rating is for vibration in high speed machines that run at speeds similar to skating over 200 mph. They are not the best design for skating but companies make a lot of them for other reasons and it is cheaper to get them than a design that is custom made. Bones, Twin Cam, Zero Drag, and some other companies have custom designs for their better bearings.

- I think this stuff should be fine, though I don't know if it will help speed up your bearings. I've used WD40 on my bearings before and it didn't seem to hurt, so you should be okay to put this stuff on. I would also recommend that you check in with a local skate shop and ask what they would consider before you put it on just in case.
