If your wheels use the 688 micro bearings (only in common use on some roller hockey wheels) your choices will be very limited. The 688's were popular on fitness and racing skates a few years ago but were found to not have the promised advantages and people complained that they were not as durable when subjected to outdoor conditions than the traditional 608 bearings. Most companies quit making 688 wheels and bearings, except for hockey.

- Through the oil pan, if you have a clear shot. It will take about 2 hours. However, that is not really the best thing to do as you will want to have the crankshaft milled down so that it is perfectly round. Otherwise the bearings will slip again. That will take time at a machine shop and generally cost around $100. Also you will need oversized rods after doing that. Also to do the above you will need to pull the engine out.

- Friction bearings are not illegal, but banned for interchange per AAR interchange rules. So the car owner can't force the railroad to take the car. Railroads could accept the car at their discretion, but lately the class I's have been very risk-averse. Probably because their railroads are darn busy. I have heard of a few interesting hospital moves of large blocks of heritage equipment including Shays on their own wheels. However this was done by someone very influential with the Class I involved, and at the least busy times (i.e. Christmas day).
- Q: I recently had a repair done to my vehicle, and on the bill,they noted wheel bearings make noise. I went back in to ask the mechanic, and he stated to me that if I drive down the road I hear a roaring noise, and those are my wheel bearings. I asked him if this is something I should get taken care of right away, and he stated, no, not until it is very loud, so loud that you cannot drown the noise out with the car radio. - You need to find another mechanic or take it to a REAL mechanic. You absolutely should have the wheel bearings replaced before your repair bill gets higher as they fail. If you plan to keep the car, have them replaced on both front wheels. If you only plan to have the car for less than a year, just do the one that's failing. Depending upon the car, it can range from rather inexpensive to ridiculously expensive. Replacing wheel bearings is a normal maintenance item and to be expected as the miles add up.
