The outer ring of drawn cup needle roller bearing is punched with the high-quality steel sheet. - You might laugh.... until you try it. Then you will be like... That dude on Yahoo answers was so right. Old trick, but its more for smooth bearings than actual cleaning, although they do get clean in the process. Get a glass. Buy Johnsons and Johnsons baby oil. Fill the glass with enough of the baby oil so when you dump your bearings in there, they are fully immersed. Let those babies sit in there for a few hours. Take out the bearings, wipe all the crap and dirt from them.. clean them real good. Spin them, get the crap out of them. THEN... fill up another glass with the baby oil... same thing, dump all your bearings in there fully immersed. Leave it overnight... wake up next morning, lightly wipe them, assemble your bearings and wheels. Dont OVERTIGHTEN! Just enough that the wheels are solid, but not tightly bolted. Let her rip! Don't be afraid to wear a grin of awesomeness when you discover how much better the bearings are. Find a nice smooth patch of road... take a few pushes, and see how far you roll.

I was told that the only way to get one is off a salvage car or to buy a new drive shaft because Ford does not sell this part seperate. - From Ford buying a new carrier might mean buying a driveshaft with it if they know it's an issue and they think the driveshaft is causing it. I really don't know. The bearings might be available from an auto parts store by themselves. You can get used carrier assemblies with the bearings in them from a salvage yard or Ebay. The carriers fit multiple popular Ford vehicles so they're everywhere. Call around and ask. BTW it's a little odd that a 2008 vehicle would need axle carrier bearings already. That's not a part that fails with any frequency at all. Unless you put on about 200k miles or drive it hard I wouldn't expect them to go bad. I'd file a complaint with safercar just to cover yourself since if they were to lock up or toss the driveshaft it could cause an accident. You can call Ford(main headquarters) directly and tell them it's unusual for this to happen and see if they'll pay for all or part of the repair.

- You can pull the bearings and take the numbers off of them or take the (cleaned up) bearings into any bearing retailer and get new ones from your favorite manufacturer. You don't need the part number, you need the bearing number. That number is universal and will get you the correct bearing regardless of manufacturer. Or you can go on over to the V-star forum and look through their archives - search for wheel bearings. I'm sure someone has the bearing numbers for your bike as well as special procedures to make it easier to replace the bearing on your bike. Each wheel set seems to have some special quirks to it.

- Ball bearings?? There are no ball bearings in the front end of a Ford Explorer, or any other car for that matter. Most cars use tapered roller(drum)bearings. They usually run 10-25$ per side, plus 5-15$ for new seals to put around them. Grease will be about 10$ for a can of good stuff. Do it yourself and save some money on the labor.

- If okorder /... If you're talking about dismantling the actual bearing... Take off the shield with a needle or something, hit bearing multiple times until it breaks. Gather pieces.
