Q:97 Prelude. What happens when the bearings and drive shaft go bad? How long before I have to replace?
Very unusual for front wheel bearing to fail. Why did you say drive shaft earlier? The car has CV axles that act like drive shafts. If one fails, you are going to have to have a tow. Jack up the car on one side then the other. Look for a shaft that goes to the wheel from the trans axle. There should be 2 boots per axle. If the boots crack they will be covered with dirt and grease. This will eventually precipitate the universal joint within the boot to fail and break. On wheel bearings, if they are bad, you may or may not be able to drive the car until one of them seizes. Then you will need a tow. Maybe you should get used to using public transportation. Either way, you are going to have to get your problem fixed. It's like my wife. Her Honda needs both CV axles, a timing chain and ball joints on both sides. I want her to drive my 89 Pontiac until I can fix her Honda, but she complains that she doesn't like the gas mileage on the Pontiac. I told her, what does it matter? She has three things that are eventually going to drop her in the middle of the freeway and maybe getting run over by a semi truck. I plan on sabotaging her Honda so she if forced to use the Pontiac. Don't get yourself stuck out on a limb. Either park the Honda and get on public transportation or get it fixed. By the way, my wife's Honda Accord has 450,000 miles on it.

Since he has a rotating wheel mounted in some fashion to a stationary fixture, there are bearings somewhere. Any time you have one object in contact with another object, you have a bearing surface. In carpentry this could be a stationary beam setting on another stationary beam or object. In mechanical applications, normally a bearing is considered any stationary surface that has a moving object contacting it. There are many different types of bearings. Bearings can consist of cylindrical devices with steel balls or rollers that keep the moving object from coming in contact with the stationary object, a bronze cylinder inserted into the stationary object inside of which a shaft made of a harder material turns and is lubricated with grease or oil, a solid metal object in which a hole is bored and a shaft turns inside of the hole, (old style disc bearings made from white cast iron, the aluminum camshaft bearing surfaces on the cylinder head of a motorcycle or an oil impregnated hard maple wooden block used on old farm machinery are good examples). On most crankshafts an insert bearing is used, which is basically a half round strip of steel that separates the engine block and crankshaft. They have a coating of meduim hard copper sandwiched between the hard steel back that contacts the non-noving surface and the soft babbit surface the crankshaft rides on. Actually the crank doesn't ride on the bearing, but pressure lubrication keeps a layer of oil between the babbit surface and crankshaft surface, preventing metal to metal contact. To answer your question, you'll have to count how many shafts or devices rotate or moveinside of a stationary object. That can be the crankshaft bearings, piston pin bearings, steering head bearings, the bushing on the rear brake lever or shift lever shaft, etc.

The main advantage of a water cooled bearing is you can use the a portion of the water from the pump discharge to lube the bearings. That way you can always be assured of the lubricating fluid supply and do not have to relay on another pump. Some pumps do use another source, especially if the water being pumped is dirty, but it is still cheap and non-contaminating if some leaks into the pumped fluid. However, water is not always a good lube especially on pumps with high speeds and/or mechanical loads. Water is not very viscous and becomes less so with increased temperature. Even small 3600 rpm pumps will use oil for lubrication. Some large, high pressure pumps will have their own oil pumping and cooling system for the bearings.

Honestly i wouldnt try cleaning them! Almost everyone i know who has tried cleaning them, they have seized up after. So if i was you buy new ones even cheap ones are good. Swiss if you can afford it. Bones Reds or Mini Logo are very cheap! Also pop the sheids off they make them a little faster and sound really good after they are worn in! Let me know what you end up getting! :)

Wow! thats really too soon to be replacing the bearings,there is DEFINETLY other severely worn parts in the front end, you should take the van to a front end specialist and have them look at it.Question;does he replace the race also when replacing the bearings? if he doesn't, that is the problem, you MUST replace the ''race also ,and if he does, then the problem is with other worn parts in the front end.
