- Q: My fiance's 2002 Cougar is overheating and we can't seem to diagnose the problem. As soon as she touches the gas pedal, the meter shoots to quot;Hquot;, but when we sit at a red light, it returns to center. I tried googling a few things and I've gotten a few things about the water pump, but I know next to nothing about cars. Where is it so I can look at it and feel dumb about STILL not being able to do anything? =D
- Leave the water pump alone! It sounds to me like your gauge is malfunctioning. Every so often an electrical gauge will fail and give strange readings. It could either be the sensor that reads your coolant temp or the gauge body itself. Your car cannot go from overheating to fine while stationary at a red light. Take it to a shop (that specializes in electrical, they're out there) and tell them the temp gauge is acting wacky. If you INSIST to know the location of your water pump...should be on the passenger side of the car mounted to the engine. It's either driven by an accessory belt or the timing belt, I can't remember at the moment. Here's a trick also. Water pumps are designed to leak when they fail. See if you can find coolant spilling out of anywhere a few ounces at a time. Good luck!
- Q: I have a 1969 Chrysler with a new 3 core radiator. It still has the stock water pump and I am wondering if a high volume pump would make it run cooler at higher speeds. It runs hotter when you get off the freeway. I have flushed the system and installed a new thermostat. I also replaced the fan clutch. I am at a loss of why it still runs warmer than the 180* thermostat.
- Sometimes I really wonder about Robert. Yeah, water boils at 212--AT ATMOSPHERIC pressure. But a cooling system is pressurized to RAISE the boiling point. So, ah, Robert is once again in left field. Because if you wait for it to boil over, you've probably already caused engine damage. You do NOT need a high volume pump. The 3 core radiator does NOT need more flow. The temp gauge should not fluctuate. That's the job of the T-stat--to regulate engine temp and keep it at a set point. If you're engine is getting hot at higher speeds, Check for missing baffles or cracked fan shroud
- Q: Theirs a house on a hill and a pond at the bottom of the hill what kind of pump can pull water 50ft up a hill?
- None. Atmospheric pressure is equivalent to about 10m of water height = 30ft. When a pump pulls water (or any liquid), up a certain height of pipe, it does do by lowering the pressure. In a centrifugal pump (the most common type for handling water) the point of lowest pressure is the centre of the rotor (the eye of the pump). In order to pull water 10m up, equivalent to 30ft, the pressure at the eye of the pump would be 0, which is unattainable. Not only that, but the water will begin to boil at a certain low pressure determined by the temperature of the water. That pressure at which the water begins to boil determines the lowest pressure than can exist at the eye of the pump and is a critical design variable. There are several ways to circumvent the problem of pumping water higher than 30ft. One would be to install more than one pump, with one of the pumps half-way up the hill. The other would be to install one single pump, but to place it near the pond. There is a limit to how high a pump can PULL (suck) water, but there is no limit, other than the amount of pressure the pum can generate and the piping can handle, to how far up a pump can PUSH water. If you need to puch water higher, you can always buy a bigger pump.
- Q: Im an SHO fan looking to get another one. The car I'm looking at is a 1991 Taurus SHO. Price is pretty cheap and nothing wrong with it except he said the water pump will need replaced soon. Ive looked at water pumps and Im aware of cost. Im decently savvy with car repair but there are a few things ive never learned. How easy is it to replace a water pump? Should I have a go at it myself or is it better to be done professionally? What is the general cost for a garage to switch out the water pump?
- 1991 Ford Taurus
- Q: replaced one themostat, disconected lower unit twice look at the water pump everything looks fine but when lower unit was reconnected water pump would not work. not sure if asembled it wrong or forgot to d somthing. can someone help.
- if all is lined up properly use compressed air and blow through the visual. this will dislodge any debris that may be blocking the water passages.
- Q: I am having water shortage problems and wonder if there is more I can do to maintain the health of my pump motor , pressure switch , and diaphram tank , if I run one outlet in or out of house , it only takes another spigot being used or a toilet flush to cause the system to run dry .I then have to reprime pump to have water or pump will run dry until it overheats ,

- Q: Not sure of the year model but think it is a 1991 to 1995 Jayco 2500FS bumper pull trailer. I bought it to put on a deer lease. One of the previous owners had taken out the water tank which I plan on replacing. I can't find the water pump to see if I need to replace it as well. Also, if you know about how the pump knows when to kick on i.e. pressure switch, push button or what. I know I could take it to have repairs done but enjoy the diy thing. I am in the process of finding out the exact year model as well. Thanks!
- having had many travel trailers the water pump is usually in a cabinet or under a bed or couch with a lot of plastic water lines near where you screw the water hose into the side of the trailer. and they are usually a preset psi from the factory so that is usually nothing to have to worry about and most have an on off switch located in the traier by the kitchen sink. And if the hot water heater is no good look into a tankless water heater it will save you money in the long run but initially you have to have a vent installed up through the roof away from a roof air vent. Another suggestion everytime you move a travel trailer they get the crap pounded out of them and someone needs to go up on the roof with a ladder and/or a plank that goes across the width so there is no weight standing on a roof to make dents or pop seams. Use some plastic stuff like plasticote available at wal mart after you move the trailer and set it up go up and make sure to double coat any of the seams that need it. I crank the heat up inside the trailer and do a double coat the heat rising will put a skin on the plasticote in a few hours instead of 12 or more. and the double coat gets any cracks missed the first time around. After that check it once a year if the trailer stays there.
- Q: Water pump motor often caused by water can not run, how can solve?
- You are immersed in water or oil pump pump, if flooding do not be afraid, if you put oil thread wrapped with waterproof tape, general water pump inlet is in the end, you want what the price of copper or aluminum pumps, the price is basically the same, do not buy too cheap water pump
- Q: took car to meachanic on a friday drove home . mecahnic put in timing belt engine coolant water pump car on sunday leaking alot of green fluid and smoke coming from hood
- WHATcountry are you FROM?? BAD use of english. They used WRONG type coolant and CHEAP parts and CHEAP gaskets! most cars do NOT USE GREEN COOLANTS any more. WHAT KIND OF CAR IS THIS! you MUST use ONLY the water pump and coolant from your DEALERSHIP! all other ones are a RIP OFF and your engine will FAIL earlier! DRIVE over ANY OIL CHANGE pit where they can SEE where your leak is COMING FROM! you MIGHT have to get this WHOLE JOB done again! and you MIGHT even have ENGINE DAMAGE in there by now! SORRY!!!
- Q: How do you check water pump on 98 deville haveing overhea?
- You can't really check the water pump except that with the belt off, you wiggle it to look for play in the bearing. When the bearing gets loose, it causes seal failure and massive coolant loss. But after 100k miles it is time to do the pump anyway. Not that hard or expensive. Do the thermostat as well, just in case. But if no coolant loss, then overheating is probably from something else, like bad plug wire, intake manifold leak, plugged catalytic converter, retarded ignition, head gasket, etc. If the radiator was not clear, then the electric fan would go on often. Not likely radiator. Depends also on when heats up. If city driving, then likely to be fan or switch. If highway driving, then plugged convertor more likely. Put cooling system pressure tester on radiator cap. Check for leaks under higher than normal pressure. See if holds pressure. Then start engine and see if cylinder leak causes oscillation.
