- Q:I have a large square area rug (12x16ish), it has different colored (brown, blue, burgundy, tan, etc.) squares all over it. It got left out side in the weather most of the winter. If I were to dry it out and clean it could I do anything to make it nicer? Like, could I paint it or something? I put it outside in the first place because it was starting to get thin in spots and some of it was faded. t had to be vacuumed all the time because it was like colored dry rotted thread dust was coming off of it. I was wondering if anyone could come up with some last resort ideas before I take it to the dump. - sounds like the rug is pretty much worn out, I think the only thing you could do would be to make small door mats from the areas that are still somewhat in good shape and throw the rest away. Once a material has become so degraded as you describe, there is is no way to save it, plus it only makes cleaning and maintenance more difficult because it is constantly falling apart right under your feet.
- Q:The carpet in my apartment was old to begin with and then I got my dog a few months ago and we have poty training issues. Now my carpet and whole place smells. I bought a carpet cleaner and have tried all sorts of produts but nothing seems to work. I don't really want to have them done professionaly done because of the dog. Help?

- Wash in cold water. Air dry. The rubber will melt in the dryer. Over time, the rubber will flake off from being put in the washer, but it will work. Or, if you have access to a carpet shampooer, that would work too.
- Q:What is the best way to clean stains on a seagrass rug? These are from a cat throwing up hairballs. We have tried water, Oxyclean, baking soda, carpet foaming cleaner...Any remedies would be very much appreciated.Thanks!
- Sorry to tell yo uthat the stains are most likely permanent. Seagrass, by nature is a porous fiber. Hence the stains have penetrated the fibers in the rug, and have become inherent, just as a dye would. Your best chance would be to completely redye the rug. It may be cheaper however to buy another, and keep Puss N Boots in the other room.

- Q:I need to know a safe and easy way to get some stains (juice) from my carpeting
- If it's a fresh spill, mop up as much as you can with an old towel, then sponge with cold water and mop again, repeating as often as needed. Standing on the towel helps to mop up the juice and/or water. if it's an old stain then use a very small amount of Fairy liquid (hand dish-washing liquid) in a bowl of warm water, sponge liberally onto the stain, work in with a nail brush, working from the outside of the stain inwards to prevent spreading it. Mop up with a towel, sponge with clean water and mop again. Sponge with clean water mop at least twice more then leave to dry. NB 1.you should test that your carpet is colour-fast on a hidden area first. 2 you may be left with a clean patch on your carpet where you've cleaned it.

- Q:I am having someone put in carpet tiles in a house and we have the carpet pad to go underneith. Does it go, Carpet pad, glue, and then carpet tiles? What should I tell them?
- I've never heard of any one putting carpet pad down before applying carpet tiles. I have seen them install regular carpet they always glue the pad down place the carpet on top of that. If you don't get a better answer to your question I would call Home Depot ask them. I did find the instructions below for installing carpet tiles but no mention of carpet pad. DIRECT STICK CARPET TILES The carpet tiles are adhered to the sub floor using Roberts 656 Carpet Tile Double Bond Underlay Adhesive. The sub floor should first be primed with Roberts 370 Floor Wall Primer prior to the application of the carpet tile adhesive. If the carpet tile is laid into a wet film of adhesive it forms an almost permanent bond between the carpet tile and sub floor. The carpet tiles may also be laid into the adhesive when it has dried to a clear tacky film allowing them to be more easily removed if repairs or replacement is required.
