An MR in the Navy is a Machinist. You will be operating machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, drill presses and engraving machines. An MR has an average sea/shore rotation of 3.5 years sea to 3.5 years of shore. However, this changes according to your rank. I was an MR for 21 years. I spent half my time assigned to a ship. I rotated to shore about every 4 years. Every ship has at least one MR depending on the type of ship. Destroyers and cruisers have one but possibly 2 MR's. Carriers have about 10 MR's. Repair ships (only 2 left in the Navy) have around 30 -50 MR's. MR's may also have collateral duties in damage control or stand watches in engineering spaces.
