Q:The water pump gasket in my '98 Forester (130k) recently began to leak, and I will be replacing it in the next couple days. I noticed a stream of bubbles in my overflow container, though, and am wondering if it might be bad head gaskets making the air bubbles. The bubbles only appear after the engine is warmed up, like after a drive around town - there aren't any bubbles when the engine is cold.Is it possible that these air bubbles are coming from the leaking water pump? I hope so, because I'd much rather replace the pump than the head gaskets!
Yes it is from the leaky water pump. Because it is leaking it will most prob be sucking air. If it was a head gasket you would notice it when cold as well
Q:I tried using my water line with a pressure tank and pressure switch but without a pressure tank I observed that when he pressure reaches 30 psi the motor pump switches off automatically and when we open the faucets to use water the pressure switch turns on again the motor pump.
Never use a water well pump system without a pressure tank. The tank performs several functions - when it is in good operating condition. You want a specific amount of run time and off time on the submersible pump that will bring your water system and tank to a set pressure range. And as said, it is a buffer to eliminate surging. Plus permit a proper cycle time. Most standard water systems are set in a 20 pound differential. It is frequently set to pump at 30 PSI and shut off at 50 PSI or pump at 40 PSI and off at 60 PSI. 30 PSI is quite a low setting on the pressure switch Defective pressure tanks are very common and when they go bad, the risk of damage to the pump is at hand. There are very specific criteria to follow for a water well system. Too many variables to list here It would be best to have a reputable water well service person assist you. Pulling a defective submersible pump is not fun or inexpensive. Make a call - you will be glad you did in the long term.

Two more things to add... 1. Buy a chilton manual. it will help and give step-by-step instructions and pictures. 2. (assuming a 4.0l 6cyl) The water pump doesn't just come off. The bolts holding the water pump also hold the AC, Alternator, and Power Steering pump. Its not a big deal, but it takes a while and you don't take these out, just lay them to the side. Personally, it was worth having the local shop do the work.

Q:My radiator light came on this morning i was running late for work so i topped it off with water (about twice a year the light comes on, it has only ever had to be topped off) and after about 20 minutes of driving it started to heat up, so i pulled over shut it offsomebody stopped checked the temp of the water in the reservoir, said it felt to only be about 100 degrees, but topped it off with more water. the gauge dropped right back down to being almost as cold as when you first drive it, but after about 2 miles it was right back up near the red line.I pulled over again there was steam coming off the engine. I stuck my finger in the water it felt warm, but nowhere near hot. I couldn't get it cool enough to finish driving to work. Does this sound like the water pump?If so, how long should this take a decent mechanic to replace?If not, what else could it be?
it could be your water temp sensor hitting an air pocket. but it may be more. if your thermostat is shot, the water in the engine will heat up very hot, but wont flow to the radiator. so the temp the the radiator will still be low. i would say you should get a new thermostat and go from there
Q:The water is being put in because it was overheating. We changed the thermostat and everything and it got better, but about a month later it started overheating again and now it is leaking water bad from underneath the car. If the leak is on the passenger side of the car (near the tire) then it is most likely your water pump. It is driven by the serpentine belt that drives most of the visible components on the passenger side of the engine. (power steering, A/C, Alternator etc) To check it, you need to look UNDER the water pump, it has a weep hole. If this small (1/8) hole is wet, or shows signs of having been leaking (like discoloration or rust) then your waterpump seals or bearings are going. The unit must be replaced. This should also fix your over heating problems. If the leak is near the back-center of the engine, then it may be a frost plug (also called a freeze plug) these are designed to pop if the enging coolant freezes to prevent damage to the engine block, they can also be opened if the engine over heats. Be careful when replacing this plug, if you drive it INTO the engine, you will have to dismantle the engine to get it out again. On the plus side, you can get rubber plugs that are easy to install and quite inexpensive. I'd place the water pump as the most likely problem.

If you've got the fan off you have the hardest part done on that vehicle,follow the manuals and line the parts up as you remove them.Be sure to put the bolts with the part they belong to and install them in the reverse order you took them off.
