- No. Cardboard is cardboard is cardboard. It is one of the lowest quality paper products, and has a garbage archival quality, because the acidity of the wood pulp makes it decompose quickly. That is why it is a horrible choice for any art that you want to last. Acrylic resin is essentially your only semi-affordable choice, basically because it will help to stabilize the naturally self-destructive nature of the cardboard. There is no liquid metal that hardens magically. There IS metallic paint, but you would have to put dozens of layers on to achieve any sort of cohesive strengthback to resin. You don't like the idea of resin, and you don't have enough of a budget to even do your sculptures out of paper mache powder, which would be 10 times better than cardboard. There is no magical coating you can afford that will do what you want, and of course real metal would either be melted, burning your cardboard, or be quite thin. Which is your only other option - Aluminum foil, possibly glue laminating pieces or sheets together for added strength. I would suggest a spray adhesive (done outdoors, away from buildings, using a large cardboard box as a spray booth.

- Wow you have a lot more materials to work with than I did! We had to use just straws and masking tape. From what I remember, the best egg drop containers were the ones that acted as shock absorbers for the egg. Don't try to slow the egg down with a parachute. It almost always backfires and slams the egg into the side of whatever building your dropping it off. I made a box out of straws and tape, then cut up straws for packing material and taped it shut. It fell like a stone but the egg was one of the few that was perfectly in tact with no cracks or anything.
