- Unfortunately there is not way to really get wall to wall carpets clean without some kind of extraction machine. I know you said you couldn't afford to rent one. However, if you ask around you may find someone who can lend you one for a weekend - perhaps in exchange for a nice meal, an evening of babysitting or some other gesture of thanks.

- For spot cleaning I use spray Resolve. It works great! I spray it on the stains and rub it with a dry rag and the stain is gone! When I shampoo my house rugs I use Bissell Rug Cleaner in my Rug Shampoo Machine. I also use this Bissell Rug Cleaner on my car matts. I just mix it with water and I use a scrub brush~~in my deep sink, NOT MY CAR, lol You can do it in your bathtub too, I would guess.
- Q: I have a new apartment with wood floors and need to soften up part of it for sitting, yoga, stuff like this. I love Persian rugs but can't afford one. I'm wondering, what about an area rug that is basically carpet you would find in somebody's house... only not installed or glued to the floor. Just a roll of carpet. I don't know the terminology. This doesn't have to be fancy. What is the best way to go about getting such a thing? Do carpet stores have surplus carpeting laying around if you don't particularly care about style or size? - I'd get a knockoff Persian before I'd get carpet remnants, but most stores keep leftovers. Call and ask.

- Nail polish remover? If that doesn't work, try using a razor to remove the portion of the fibers that are damaged.
