Q: how much power do they require and how much room do they take up?
If you are talking about the truck (traction) motors on a locomotive, then whole power system! diesel engine, generator, exciter generator, truck motors, can range anywhere from seven hundred horsepower for a switch engine up to several thousand horsepower for a line haul locomotive. The traction motors get their power from the generator which is connected to the diesel engine. There is no direct mechanical connection from the diesel engine to the wheels. All the diesel engine does is turn the generator. The power from the generator is what running the traction motors which in turn drives the wheels of the locomotive. That is where the term diesel over electric comes from. In short the diesel engine drives the generator. The power from the generator drives the traction motors. The traction motors drive the wheels. The wheels drive the locomotive. The amount of power the generator puts out is controlled by two things. How fast it is turning (number of RPM and how much excitation voltage it's fields are being excited with by the exciter generator. Both the RPM's and the excitation voltage is controlled by the engineer. The advantage of using diesel over electric is they can tandem several locomotives together to pull long trains and be able to control them all from the lead engine. (Locomotive) As far as size Look at the trucks on the locomotive. The area between the wheels is pretty muchly taken up by the traction motors. Here is another fact. The generator is a DC generator and the traction motors are DC motors. Most of the time they are series wound DC motors for better starting torque since they are always coupled to a load. Q: I would like to try a browns gas generator on a 3 cylinder Diesel engine to compare efficiency and save money and not add a turbo to the unit. I just wanted to know if anyone had any experience in this. I am also considering a natural gas flow to the intake.
Their should be different generators out there for different engine types. Try to search the term HFI on the net. --As they are often called hydrogen fuel injection systems - Though HFI's do not make pure hydrogen --as they are often confused to do--, the generators often hook up to the battery and use some battery power to run a small machine, which then converts water (H2O) into browns gas(HHO) by rearranging the molecules via electrolysis. The systems that I have seen usually inject the browns gas (HHO-- which has more energy per unit mass) with a mixture of fuel which then is combusted much more efficiently as a mixture than gasoline or diesel fuel alone (which have more energy per unit volume)

you need to look at the power requirements of the air conditioner of 2 tons it should indicate it's power requirements.
Q: I have a diesel truck as well as a 25,000 watt diesel standby generator for my home. I'm curious if they will be affected should a solar flare zap us. I'm not too well versed in the whole solar storm issue.
The very most a flare has ever done in recorded history is trip circuit breakers on long distance power lines.

An air cooled engine's temperature is maintained by a flow of air over the engine itself (usually with an assortment of cooling fins molded into the design of the block and head(s)) to reduce the heat produced by the engine. A liquid cooled engine circulates a liquid around the engine (in a water jacket) and passes that liquid through a radiator or heat exchanger in the case of a marine application to dissipate the excess heat.

At 600 volts they usually pull a maximum of around 1500 amps, that is short term, sustainable would be somewhere 1000 to 1200, depends on the locomotive.

i don't know about your possibilities where you are but i would definitely suggest using as much natural lighting as possible and the alternate wood heating furnaces available
