- Q: can somebody explain to me electrical power distribution for jackup rigstarting from the engine to generator then bus,MCC1,MCC2,SCR
- Nice to have your Q, i am also a Jack up Rig Design Engineer. Ok. see 1st of Jackup rigs have diesel generators which provide power supply for the various electrical power requirements on rig. usually the voltage level is 6.6kV, 4.16kV, 690V or 600 V which is then further reduced upto 415V, 220V/127V as per load and client requirements since it affects the design and overall space required and size of rig as well. the generated power is 1st transferred to the main PMCC or MCC known as generator switchboards. from here the power is dirtributed to various other switchboards such as jacking MCC, drilling MCC, Ventilation MCCs, VFD panels (for top drive mud pump panels through VFD/SCR system) and other MCCs for other electrical loads. voltage is further reduced upto 415V/220V/127V for lighting and other lv loads using dry type transformers. oil filled trafos are not preferred since they r bulky and not feasible to have them on rigs since its in sea and also problem in maintenance. cables used are usually of XLPE or XLPO insulation. the configuration is as follows CU/XLPE or XLPO/Inner sheath (SHF)/Armour/Outer sheath (SHF), the inner and outer sheath has to be low smoke halogen free material, armour is usually bronze wire armour, usually cables used are all flame proof as per iec 60332, cat 3-22A and cables for emergency purposes are fire resistant as per iec 60331. hope this is fine.
- Q: i have 350kw old diesel generator and want to calculate the exact consumtionption at various loads.
- You will need the specific fuel consumption of the engine, but it is probably close to 0.5 pounds per HP hour or 250g/KW.h. That is specified for the output shaft power at the operating RPM. It depends whether you have a turbo charger, the fuel a little, the air temperature and barometric pressure. Make sure exhaust and air intakes are not restricted too. You may find for a gen-set that you get a set of curves with the fuel consumption for different KW output. These account for the alternator efficiency already. Contact the engine supplier etc for this info. Use KWh from the generator (volts x amps x time gives KVAh not KWh). The amps might be up to 20% higher, depending on power factor of the load. The reactive part of the load does not need power from the engine. This is why I say to use KWh not KW, as you can use ordinary KWh meters (which ignore the reactive load). Allow for the efficiency of the generator (which varies somewhat, especially at light loads). Let's say 85%. Remember it is exciting the field, so that must be included in the efficiency. Thus if you are using 350KW for one hour, the engine provides 350KWh/0.85 411.8KWh (412KWh). The fuel used is 412KWh x 0.25Kg 103Kg of fuel. Now you need the specific gravity of the fuel you are using. You can call the fuel distributor. Ideally this is corrected for temperature of the fuel with the engine running, remembering the engine heats the fuel in the day tank due to recirculation. Let's assume 0.85 is the SG, so that means 0.85kg/l so 103Kg of fuel is 103/0.85 121 liters. In practice it may be higher, especially if the engine is old and worn. This answer is something like the maximum consumption, full rated output, 121 liters per hour. OR 26.6 imperial gallons or 32 US gallons per hour.
- Q: I have a 1992 chevy 250 with a 6.5 turbo diesel, I have built a hydrogen generator for it that produces 2lt./min. but do not know how to hook it to the truck or where before or after the turbo.
- You should hook it up before the turbo. After the turbo is pressurized which will make it hard to feed the gas in.
- Q: I have diesel generator and when I loaded it up to 400 KW trip due to low ferquncy in which its total load 905 KW after I check up , I think that because fuel is not increase to feed injuction pump so that I want to know how actuator working ?
- By the revolutions of the generator, or the (presuming AC output) frequency of the power generated. If the frequency is low, the revolutions are low. If the revolutions drop off when load is added, or frequency falls, you have a problem. somewhere.
- Q: I have been trying to research the specifics of utilidor functionality for nearly two weeks and have come up with hardly any information. What I'm wanting to know is, at certain access points of utilidors in artic areas, is there something above ground that powers the tunneling below like possibly a transformer or a generator? I know it seems unfeasible to have either one out in the open to be exposed to the elements but I still want to know. And also even if this isn't the case now, was it so when the tunnel systems were first made?
- Utilidors is an acronym for Utility Corridors. This may be a tunnel system that contains all the necessary utilities to support a community, business of some other area needing electric, gas, water, sewer, communications, etc. These are found both above and below ground level depending on environmental concerns, costs, etc. The generators and transformers used to supply various points along the corridor and may be located above or below ground depending on design. A UG designed transformer for instance could be used below ground. A generator needs to be driven by something, gas engine, turbine, diesel engine, etc. these may be located below ground but it will have to have an external exhaust port somewhere. Hope this helps, Newton1Law
- Q: I have noticed that many people leave their computers on all day for some reason. I would like to know why and if its better or worse for the computer than to just turn it off. Also, is it more efficient to leave it on?Anyway, the only thing I would like to know is why do many people leave their computers on all day and if you are one of them, why?
- There are several reasons for this: 1) If it is an office computer and you are an administrator of some program, you need to keep it on so that other people can access it. In this case your computer is a server and servers are never switched off. 2) If it is in a LAN (usually but not strictly) in an office, there are some programs that run updates/scans, like antivirus virus etc. 3) If people are working on something big, they tend to lock the machines and resume work later on. Usually, it is best to restart the computer regularly. Even if you are keeping it on continuously, come later and before starting the work, restart it. Efficiency of a computer decreases if it is left on without proper air conditioning.
- Q: Generators used for electricity
- Why would the numbers for India be different from those for Lesotho or Poland for a comparable generator? Beyond the size of generator you need to figure the efficiency of the diesel. A modern one in good repair will require less fuel than an old, worn-out one.
- Q: I need to write up a pre fire plan for the Emergency Diesel Generator room aboard the ship I sail on at school, does anyone have any information? Thanks
- Nopebut I can write one for a Brigade Combat Team in the attack or on the defense
- Q: Does anyone know ? can you use bio diesel on a diesel generator
- You have to be careful. From a power standpoint, yes, bio-diesel is a good choice - not quite the energy content of regular diesel, but pretty close. The potential problem is that bio-diesel is not always compatible with all engines. First, bio-diesel, by its nature, is like a solvent, and will loosen any gunk that has built up in fuel tanks and lines from the use of regular diesel fuel. Most people who use bio-diesel for the first time notice that filters clog up really fast. Secondly, some seals may not be compatible with bio-diesel, and may deteriorate. Also, bio-diesel is susceptible to water intrusion, and could contribute to (minor) rusting in the fuel system, if care is not taken.
