- Q: I just opened up the water pump on my '86 cr250 and found it to be pretty dry. Found out why as soon as I threw some light on it. Yep, all but a TINY hole in both hose nipples (?) are completely gunked up in some nice light green/white crap.Does anybody know what this is? Okay obviously it's coolant, but why is it so dry? What causes it? My bike never quot;overheatedquot;, but there's very little travel room for the liquid. What should I do now? Clean it out and run new water through it?
- Appears your cooling system has not been flushed for years thus the build-up of slime, (seems maybe even 'dry-slime'). The cooling system should be flushed clean, a new water pump and gaskets installed.
- Q: I drive a 1995 Acura integra ls model I'm mechanically inclined just not enough to do a headgasket (more patience wise) my car loses coolant once in every 3 weeks it starts to over heat. I don't have white smoke coming out of the exhaust or milky oil. Everything else runs smooth on my car. I've head it pressure tested and every thing else checks out so I'm kind of lost. All hoses are fine and not leaking and there is no coolant leaks showing up on the ground. Any ideas?
- Have you checked for coolant inside the car ? it could be the heater core or you may have a small leak at a hose that burns off before you can find it.
- Q: I have a 2005 Impala and it has been acting funny. Some morning the heat takes about 20 minutes to start working. The air conditoner has not came on once. The gage also takes awhile to start working and when it does it goes pass the halfway mark.I even notice when im sitting at a red light, i can feel the engine shaking a little. I have a appt to get it check and put on the machine tomorrow. I just want to go there with an idea of what the problem could be. Could this be a thermostat or water pump problem???? Help?
- 99%odds on thermostat (or combination of thermostat and presure cap) is problem! If pressure cap not sealing properly, it is possible that no water is being pushed into heater circuit (water part)-- Lack of normal engine temperature would just aggrivagte the problem! I have yet to see a waterpump that worked too good,- so that an engine ran too cold! Really,-- a waterpump that is bad would make the engine run too hot, - and even that is unlikely unless something is broken inside where it can't be seen......... Most (bad) waterpumps leak enough water so that engine overheats from lack of water !! The reason engine shakes is because it is running too rich, -- the computer thinks it is still too cold to drive normally so the encrichment valve puts in more gas than normal-- (this is equivalent of a choke on normally carbureted engines), -- which are now history because of computers! Have cooling system pressure checked (including checking pressure cap), and get thermostat replaced, -- this will most likely take care of your problem!
- Q: was told by a Toyota Service that this would only be 1 hour more labor and cost me about 140 dollars more..and that they always recommend it being done same time as timing belt and water pump replacement....but is really a good idea or not? (if engine is 20 years old..but has ony 150 ,000 miles on it..btw. this is for a 94 Toyota 4 Runner V6 engine
- Yes do it. As long as your in there. I do the same thing and recommend it also. You have a good mechanic man that seems to know their stuff.
- Q: i need the location of the water pump or for the thermostat thank you
- The water pump is timing belt driven and is under the plastic timing cover on passenger side. These water pumps have a history of breaking, due to the fact they have a plastic impeller and it shears off the shaft, which causes the engine to overheat. First you want to remove the thermostat and then check the water pump. Follow the lower radiator hose to where it connects to the engine. That flange is where the thermostat is at. After you remove the thermostat you can shine a light in the hole and put your finger in there, if the impellar of the water pump moves, it needs to be replaced. If it does, then you might as well replace the timing belt and tensioner, seeing how you have to remove it to get the water pump off.
- Q: I would like to know how difficult it is to change a water pump on my mustang? Is it something I can do by myself? I do know about cars and can perform general maintenance, I am not totally ignorant to whats going on underneath the hood of my car I'm just not sure if I have the tools needed and how difficult it is to do. What tools do I need? Do I need a torque wrench? If anyone can help me out I would appreciate it. Thanks!
- It's not hard, just time consuming. You will need BOTH metric and standard size sockets deep sockets and/or wrenches. For the tensioner pulley you only need 18mm closed-end wrench and you can pull upwards on the tensioner to release tension on the belt. Use a brand new water pump. Do not EVER use a remanufactured water pump. With a new pump you will have a lifetime warranty from any of the popular brand name auto parts stores. For the water pump the battery being disconnected is not required. That is required depending on the car you're working on, but on a 5.0L Mustang it's not. Be sure to stop by Walmart or parts store and pick up a tube of Permatex Blue RTV. Apply a thin bead of RTV on the gasket mating surface then put the gasket on. Don't do this until you're ready to put the pump on. Be sure to use a good scraper to remove old gasket material from the gasket mating surface of the timing cover. DO NOT USE A TORQUE WRENCH ON WATER PUMP BOLTS ON A 5.0L MUSTANG. These bolts are very hard to find now. You only need to snug them at first and then hand tighten them. The factory bolts are notorious for corroding and becoming stuck in the block after their heads snap off. Do not turn the bolts too quickly and be sure to clean them off with a wire brush if they have ANY corrosion and spray them with lubricant before reinserting.
- Q: I have a 1998 ford taurus. It started to over heat so i turned on the heater full blast and it didn't get hot. so i put antifreeze in it and i turned it on and it seemed ok but it started to over heat again and the tank for the antifreeze looked like the cap was going to pop off. I was just down the road from my house so i thought if i drove slow i could make it home and it turned on ok but when i put it in drive it stalled. Does this mean its the water pump??????
- This is bad news. For some reason, you ran low on antifreeze. It may have been your water pump or a hose leaking that caused it. Here's the problem now. More than likely a head gasket is leaking, or a head is cracked. Either way this is a big job and should be diagnosed properly first. Sorry. Good Luck!
- Q: can a worn water pump make the car idle high while in park when driven for a long period of time......03 grand prix
- The water pump is only an impeller and moves fluid through the engine for the purpose of cooling. With that in mind, no, it should have no effect. Suspect you have a vacuum leak that is causing your high idle, check for a high pitched whistle and when you find it, fix it.
- Q: i'm trying to make a small water fountain, i have a tiny motor that i can use, but i dont know how to use it to make the water go up :( haha heeeelpthanks in advance:)
- I doubt that your motor is waterproof. You would do better to just purchase one of the many fountain pumps all ready available at many home improvement centers or online. They are water proof and have the pump and motor all in one enclosure.
- Q: im buying a mazda 626 for 800 abd the owner selling just let me know that the water pump is going out. is it a fairly easy fix or should i keep shopping for a vehicle?
- your car WILL over heat and you will need a new engine if you dont change the water pump. most people dont have the luxury of knowing their water pump is about to go. so what you do it go down to advanced or auto zone get your self a DIY book for your car 15.00 and a water pump 50 and some accessory belts because if yoy go through all this trouble to take them off you might as well change them. also check the timing belt because you will have access to it when u remove the water pump if it looks likes its going to go bad in the next 10K or so miles change it. when you remove the pump and belt change gaskets this is most imperative!
