This electrical specification describes some aspects of the electrical distribution system for a block of flats (apartment building in USA terms). A 3 phase power supply is 3 live wires and a neutral with 400 volts or so between any two live wires and 230 volts or so between any live wire and the neutral. Each flat would be connected to one live wire and neutral. A change over switch is a switch that can switch the load from one power source to another. It could switch between two mains connections from the power company or it could switch between the power company mains and a standby diesel generator set. An RMU transformer is a ring main unit transformer. The transformer would be the step down or substation transformer from the transmission line voltage to the 400 volt level. There would probably be one transformer for all of the flats, possibly two if there are two mains connections from the power company. The RMU designation indicates that the transformer includes additional components such as the change over switch and main circuit breaker as a single piece of equipment. Advanced features might include such things as transformer temperature monitoring, load monitoring, and remote indication provisions. Unless the features are enumerated, it isn't a particularly useful description. It may or may not include features in addition to the minimum required by government regulations. If you are purchasing only an individual flat, this might offer some assurance that the electrical system is modern and reliable, but it is a very poor description to offer prospective purchasers of individual flats.

Q:I have put together a 4 cylinder peugeot diesel and an 8 kw alternator.At first it was direct coupled to run at 1500 rpm but didn't have enough grunt when i struck an arc with my mig welder. I then put in a lay shaft the engine runs at 2275rpm alternator at 1500rpm. same problem engine allmost stalls under heavy load. At this speed the engine is producing max torque 70 lb ft the alt should only need 33 lb ft. pls help

The simple way to calculate the sizes of pulleys in you example is to use the following equation: RPMa*DaRPMb*Db Where: RPMa is the rpm of one end of the pulley system Da is the pulley diameter of the same end as RPMa RPMb is the rpm of the other end of the pulley system (opposite of RPMa) Db is the pulley diameter of the same end as RPMb In you case we have: RPMa3000 Da12 (we will use a starting point) RPMb1800 so: 3000 * 12 1800 * Db Db(3000*12)/180010 A 10 pulley should fit nicely on a 42 mm shaft so that should work as the pulley is much larger than the shaft.

Why would the numbers for India be different from those for Lesotho or Poland for a comparable generator? Beyond the size of generator you need to figure the efficiency of the diesel. A modern one in good repair will require less fuel than an old, worn-out one.

Consumption of fuel is actually dependent on the model used so it can vary, your best resource is to get the figures from a manufacturer, take for example the Generac II Emergency Power Systems provide a Diesel Model EPS-8D see link below for full specs: So if we based on this model which consumes 0.88 gallons per hour, running for 24 hours would eat up 21.12 gallons of diesel per generator. As to the amount of current you wish to get that would depend on other set up and implements that you hook to the generator. You may need more than 1 generator to get the total amperage that you are looking for. See the equipment specs.

Q:I want to purchase a solar powered backup generator in the event that we have a power outage. I don't want a gas/diesel generator as I don't want to have to fight everyone else to get gas for a generator. I've been only able to find one solar generator that would seem to work for my home. Any suggestions?

This has to be a joke. LOL The back up failed to work, it was a rainy day. The back up failed to work when the power went out at night. The back up solar power generator is now on E-BAY.
